Is my phone compatible with eSIM? The one-minute check

Dial *#06# on your phone's keypad. If a 32-digit number labeled EID appears, your phone has eSIM hardware. It also needs to be carrier-unlocked, and a few regional models ship without eSIM even when the same model has it elsewhere. Check before you buy, not after.

Before you start

KnowRoaming plans work on iPhone XS and later and on most Android flagships released since 2019. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. Check your exact model on the device compatibility page before you buy.

Steps

  1. Open your phone's keypad and dial *#06#.
  2. Look for a 32-digit number labeled EID. If it's there, your phone supports eSIM. No EID means no eSIM hardware.
  3. On iPhone, check Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock: "No SIM restrictions" means unlocked.
  4. On Android, look under Settings > About phone for SIM lock status, where offered.
  5. Not sure? Tap Check compatibility on any plan page on knowroaming.com, on the phone you'll travel with.

The dial code works on iPhone and almost every Android brand, and it's the same check we use. The app also checks your phone during setup and tells you before you buy if it can't take an eSIM.

Good to know

  • Passed the check but the eSIM won't add? It's usually a carrier lock or a regional model without eSIM. See Carrier-locked, region-locked, or unlocked: how to tell and "Cellular plan cannot be added" and other add errors.
  • The models we see most often, with the regional exceptions, are listed in Which devices support eSIM?. Trust the dial code over any list.
  • Cellular iPads and Galaxy Tabs work too. Wi-Fi-only tablets have no eSIM hardware.
  • Your plan is data only, with no phone number, calls, or SMS. Calls and texts keep using your home number.
  • Your plan starts when you connect in a supported country, not when you buy. Your validity days count from that first connection. Unused data expires at the end of your validity period. It doesn't roll over.

Still not working?

If you bought a plan and your phone fails this check, you get a full refund as long as the plan was never added to a device. Still not working?
