Turn on data roaming for your plan on Android

Two settings get you online when you land: the KnowRoaming eSIM on with Roaming switched on, and Mobile data pointed at it. The app can add the plan, but only your phone's settings can switch roaming on. On a Samsung, use Turn on data roaming for your plan on Samsung instead.

Before you start

Do this after you land. At home, the plan shows no service, and that's normal. Your home SIM stays exactly as it is; calls and texts keep using it.

Steps

  1. Open Settings and tap Network & internet.
  2. Tap SIMs. On older Android versions this shows as Mobile network.
  3. Tap your KnowRoaming eSIM.
  4. Turn on Use SIM.
  5. Turn on Roaming.
  6. Turn on Mobile data, so this line carries your data instead of your home SIM.
  7. Give your phone a minute. When a network name appears in your status bar, you're online.

Menu names vary by brand. On Pixel the labels are as above; other brands may show Data roaming and Mobile data preference in a SIM settings screen instead.

Give your phone a minute to connect once you land. Still nothing? Switch on Airplane Mode for 30 seconds, then switch it off again.

Setting your APN

Most destinations need no APN. If yours is on this list, add it before you connect:

Destination

APN

Global, Israel, Kuwait, Morocco, Mauritius, Middle East, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa

knowroaming

Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico

tn1

Bahamas, Caribbean Destination

altanwifi APN

Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan

kroly

Europe, United States

No APN needed

Enter the value in lowercase with no spaces. On Android: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > your KnowRoaming eSIM > Access Point Names (older versions: Mobile network > Advanced > Access Point Names). If the APN is listed, select it. If not, tap the menu icon, choose New APN, enter any name you'll recognize, enter the value under APN, then save and select it.

Good to know

  • Your plan is data only, with no phone number, calls, or SMS. Calls and texts keep using your home number.
  • Data Saver holds back apps on mobile data. Turn it off in Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver while you travel.
  • Your plan starts when you connect in a supported country, not when you buy. Your validity days count from that first connection. Unused data expires at the end of your validity period. It doesn't roll over.
  • When you get home, turn data roaming off and set your data back to your regular SIM, so you don't pick up roaming charges. Your KnowRoaming plan stays on your phone, ready for your next trip.
  • Settings names and screens vary by brand and Android version. Checked on a Pixel on Android 16.
