Check your plan is on your phone and ready before you fly
A one-minute check the night before, while you're on Wi-Fi with time to fix anything. You're looking for a KnowRoaming line that's on your phone and switched off, not a working connection; at home, that's what ready looks like.
Before you start
Where your SIM list is, by phone. iPhone: Settings > Cellular. Samsung: Settings > Connections > SIM manager. Other Android phones: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
Steps
- Open the KnowRoaming app and go to My plans. Your plan shows under your device.
- Open your SIM list, at the path above for your phone.
- Confirm a KnowRoaming line is in the list. If it isn't, add the plan again from My plans.
- Leave Data Roaming off for the KnowRoaming line until you land. You'll turn it on then.
- Turn Data Roaming off for your home SIM, so it can't run up charges abroad.
- If your destination needs an APN (see your platform guide), set it now, on Wi-Fi.
Good to know
- It's fine to add your plan days before you fly, as long as you have a stable connection to do it. Leave data roaming off until you land. Nothing on your plan starts until you connect abroad, so there's no downside to adding early and switching on later.
- Your plan starts when you connect in a supported country, not when you buy. Your validity days count from that first connection. Unused data expires at the end of your validity period. It doesn't roll over.
- Your plan is data only, with no phone number, calls, or SMS. Calls and texts keep using your home number.
