5G vs LTE: What changes for you

Less than the icon suggests. Your phone connects to whichever network type is strongest where you're standing, and KnowRoaming plans don't cap you at one. For maps, messaging, browsing, and video calls, LTE is more than enough. If something feels slow, a busy network, a weak indoor signal, or a data-saver setting is a far likelier cause than the icon.

More detail

In a Japanese or South Korean city the icon will often show 5G. On a Greek island or in the Botswana bush it may show LTE or lower. It shifts as you move, based on the local network, not on anything about your plan. Where a country's networks offer 5G, its page says so. Where they don't, your plan connects to the fastest 4G LTE network there.

HD streaming and large downloads are where 5G's extra headroom shows. They're also what uses a fixed plan fastest. On an unlimited plan, a slowdown after the daily full-speed allowance is the plan working as designed, not the network. See How unlimited plans work: 5 GB a day at full speed, then slower. For everything else that feels slow, see Speeds are slower than expected.
