Adding your plan with a VPN already active
A running VPN can block the secure connection your phone makes to download an eSIM. It doesn't always cause a problem, but it's one of the quickest things to rule out: disconnect the VPN, add the plan, then reconnect it.
Steps
- Disconnect the VPN.
- Add your plan from My plans in the app, or with the QR code from your order page or email.
- Once the plan is on your phone, reconnect the VPN.
Good to know
- The same applies after you land. If data feels slow or won't connect with a VPN on, turn it off briefly to see whether the KnowRoaming connection itself is working, then turn it back on.
- On a company phone, the VPN may be enforced by IT; see Adding your plan on a work phone managed by your company's IT.
- In mainland China, a VPN is what many travelers use to reach blocked services. Add the plan before you arrive and keep the VPN for afterward; see Coverage in China.
- If it gets interrupted, you'll see "Couldn't add your eSIM to this device." Your plan is safe, nothing was charged, and you can try again from My plans.
Still not working?
