Phone stuck searching for a network? Pick one manually

"Searching" and "SOS only" are the same problem at two stages: the phone hasn't registered on a network that carries your plan, or has registered for emergency calls only. Emergency calls still go through. The causes below are in the order they turn out to be true.

Check first

Give your phone a minute to connect once you land. Still nothing? Switch on Airplane Mode for 30 seconds, then switch it off again.

A restart clears a stuck search more often than any single setting. On Samsung, a restart is also the fix for "SIM not provisioned" right after adding.

Causes, in order

The KnowRoaming line is off, or its roaming is off

A line that is off never finds a network, and a line with roaming off registers for emergency calls only. Turn the KnowRoaming line on and turn on Data Roaming for it. The taps are in Turn on data roaming for your plan on iPhone, Turn on data roaming for your plan on Samsung, and Turn on data roaming for your plan on Android.

You're looking at your home SIM's status

With its roaming off, your home line can show SOS only while the KnowRoaming line is fine. Check which line the indicator belongs to; on a dual-SIM status bar, the line label tells you.

Manual network selection is stuck

If you chose a network by hand in another country, the phone is still looking for that one. Set network selection back to automatic. See Switch networks manually when the automatic pick is weak.

You're at the edge of coverage

Between network handoffs, on a ferry leaving port, in a remote valley, or deep inside a building, searching is the phone doing exactly that. Move to an open or built-up spot and give it a minute. The destination page for your country says where coverage thins out.

You're in a country your plan doesn't cover

A country plan covers one country; a regional plan covers its list. Outside that list the phone registers for emergency calls only. Add a plan for the country you're in from the app on any Wi-Fi.

Your phone is carrier-locked

A locked phone can register on a foreign network for emergency calls only. Your home carrier can confirm and unlock it; see Carrier-locked vs. unlocked: How to tell which you have.

If it persists in a covered area with the line on, roaming on, and the line selected for data, don't remove the eSIM to start over. Message us first; we can check whether the line has registered from our side.
