A legacy eSIM is one you added before KnowRoaming moved to KR.One, when each eSIM worked for one destination only. It stays on your account, and any data left on it keeps working until the plan ends. You can't add a new plan to it. Your next plan goes on a KR.One eSIM instead, which you add once and keep for every trip after that.
Before KR.One, every KnowRoaming eSIM was tied to a single destination. A trip to Japan meant a Japan eSIM. A trip to Spain the next month meant a second eSIM. Those single-destination eSIMs are now called legacy eSIMs.
A KR.One eSIM works differently. You add it to your phone once, and every plan you buy after that attaches to it, whatever the destination. No new eSIM, no new QR code.
If you had a Universal eSIM, that is a KR.One eSIM now. Nothing changes for you. Your next plan attaches to it, the same as before.
To see which you have: in the app or on knowroaming.com, go to My plans and select Show legacy eSIMs. Anything in that list is a legacy eSIM. Anything in your main device list is KR.One.
Your legacy eSIMs stay on your account. Each one shows its destination, the data left, the date it expires, and its ICCID.
A plan with data left keeps working until it runs out or expires, whichever comes first. Nothing changes on your phone, and there's nothing you need to do. More on that in My legacy eSIM still has data. Can I keep using it?
You can't add a new plan to a legacy eSIM, and you can't top it up (here's why). When the plan ends, the eSIM stays in the list as a record of what you had. Your receipts stay in Order history.
If the list gets long, archive the ones you're done with. Archiving doesn't delete your history.
Your next trip starts the same way: pick a destination, pick a plan, pay. At checkout, choose the phone you're using. If it doesn't have a KR.One eSIM yet, the app adds one. It takes about a minute, and you keep it for every trip after that.
The full sequence, including what to do with the old eSIM on your phone, is in Moving from a legacy eSIM to KR.One.
Three things worth knowing:
Quiet destinations often lack SIM kiosks or reliable stores. An eSIM allows instant activation, monitoring, and top-ups without needing physical access.
Yes, eSIMs use the same encryption and standards as physical SIM cards.
Buying an eSIM online is easy. Simply visit KnowRoaming.com or download the KnowRoaming app (available on iOS and Android). Choose your destination and plan, complete your purchase, and receive your eSIM instantly via QR code or in-app setup.
Use a prepaid international eSIM for F1 fans so you pay local rates instead of roaming charges.
