Quels voyageurs quelles sont les questions qui nous sont le plus souvent posées ?
No. Bhutan is sold as its own plan and is not on the Asia plan or the Global plan. If the rest of the trip is on either, add a Bhutan plan to the same eSIM for this leg. Details in does a region plan cover every country in it?
In Bhutan your plan connects to B-Mobile, with 5G in Thimphu and Paro and 4G LTE in the valley towns. Your phone joins the network automatically once the plan is switched on. If it hasn't connected a minute after landing, work through the no-signal checklist.
On and off along the trail, and none inside the monastery, where phones go in lockers. Download the route in Paro the night before and treat the climb as offline.
Yes, from Phuentsholing onward; the Bhutan plan starts counting when you connect on the Bhutanese side. An India plan, the Asia plan, and the Global plan all stop at the border, so have the Bhutan plan added before you cross.
It depends on how much data you want and how many days you're staying. A fixed plan costs less overall; an unlimited plan (5 GB a day at full speed, then slower) works out to a lower daily rate the longer you stay. Every current option and price is in the plan selector at the top of this page.
In the app: open My plans, choose your Bhutan plan, and tap Top up. The extra data lands on the same eSIM within a few seconds, with nothing new to add or scan. Full steps are in topping up data without reinstalling the eSIM.
Weeks ahead. The plan's days don't start until you turn it on and connect, so a plan bought a month before departure is still complete when you land. Plans need to be activated within 90 days of purchase. See what plan validity means and when it starts.
If it's eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked, yes, which covers most phones sold since 2019. The one-minute check for iPhone, Android, and Samsung is in is my phone eSIM compatible?

Bhutan eSIM for Paro, Thimphu, and the Tiger's Nest
Set it up before you fly. It's live the moment you land, nothing to check, nothing to remember.

Bhutan is a country you enter through one dramatic airport, travel with a licensed operator, and leave with a phone full of monastery photos, and it is also a country most multi-country eSIM plans skip. The best eSIM for Bhutan is a Bhutan plan, added at home, on Wi-Fi, so that the phone connects to 5G at Paro and the guide's WhatsApp is live before you reach the car.
Below: how a Bhutan plan works, how to set it up before you fly, why the Asia and Global plans don't cover the country, and what to expect in Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, and on the climb to the Tiger's Nest.
Asian trips tend to be multi-stop, and most travel eSIMs want a fresh profile at every airport. KnowRoaming doesn't. You add the KnowRoaming eSIM, called KR.One, to your phone once, then add a plan per trip: Bhutan now, a regional plan for a later route through the countries it covers, and next year's trip on the same eSIM. Nothing to scan again, nothing to delete when you get home.
The plan's days start when you turn it on and connect in Bhutan, not at checkout. Buy it weeks ahead, add it at home, and a delayed flight costs you nothing. The full rule is in what plan validity means and when it starts.
Choose a fixed plan for a set amount of data at the lowest overall price, or an unlimited plan when you'd rather not count. Unlimited plans give you 5 GB a day at full speed, then a slower speed until the allowance resets the next day. If a fixed plan runs low, top up in the app and the extra data lands on the same eSIM.
See it in two minutes: Meet KR.One, iPhone setup with KR.One, or Samsung setup with KR.One.
Do this at home on Wi-Fi. It takes about a minute.
Before you leave
- Get the KnowRoaming app (available on iOS and Android) and choose your Bhutan plan.
- Tap Add. First time on this phone? The app adds KR.One and your Bhutan plan together. Already have KR.One? Only the plan is added, with nothing to scan.
- Leave data roaming off on the KnowRoaming line until you land, and turn it off on your home line too so it doesn't run up charges in the background. Steps are in turning off roaming on your home line.
When you land
- Turn the plan on in the app, then turn data roaming on for the KnowRoaming line. That setting lives in your phone, so the app can't flip it for you.
- Give the phone a minute to find the network. If nothing happens, turn airplane mode on for 30 seconds and off again.
Prefer a QR code? The checkout page and your confirmation email both carry one; scan it from your phone's settings. Every tap, by device, is in adding your eSIM on iPhone, adding your eSIM on Android, and adding your eSIM on Samsung, or watch the iPhone QR walkthrough or the Samsung QR walkthrough. Still no signal after landing? Work through the no-signal checklist.
Paro is the country's only international airport, served from Delhi, Kathmandu, Bangkok, and Singapore, with a landing that pilots train for specially. Thimphu, the capital, is an hour's drive. Most visitors travel on an itinerary arranged with a licensed Bhutanese operator, pay the daily Sustainable Development Fee, and hold a visa issued in advance; keep every confirmation saved offline for the airport.
The ngultrum is pegged to the Indian rupee and both circulate; cards work in Thimphu and Paro hotels and some shops, and cash covers everything else. Distances are short on the map and long on the road: Thimphu to Punakha is three hours over the Dochula pass.
Bhutan is not on the Asia plan, and it is not on the Global plan either. A traveler arriving from India or Thailand on either plan loses data at the border, and the Indian plan stops at Phuentsholing. A Bhutan plan is the one that works, added to the same eSIM as whatever covers the rest of the route; it takes about a minute in the app. Read crossing into a border country your plan doesn't include for how plans on one eSIM work together.
Thimphu has the Buddha Dordenma, the weekend market, and the country's only traffic-police junction instead of lights. Punakha's dzong at the meeting of two rivers is the country's most photographed building; the Dochula pass between them, with its 108 chortens and, on a clear morning, the Himalaya, is the drive's high point at over 3,000 meters.
B-Mobile's 5G covers Thimphu and Paro, and 4G reaches Punakha and the valley towns. The passes and the stretches of road between valleys drop signal, on any network, so the guide's number and the day's plan live on the phone before you set off.
Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest monastery, clings to a cliff above the Paro valley, and the walk up takes two to three hours each way, with a café at the halfway point. Signal comes and goes on the trail and is absent inside the monastery, where phones stay in lockers anyway. Start early, carry water, and download the route in Paro the night before.
The tshechus, the masked-dance festivals held in the dzongs, are the reason to time a trip: Paro's in spring, Thimphu's in autumn, and dozens of smaller ones in between. Dates follow the Bhutanese calendar and shift each year, hotels near the big ones fill months out, and the operators confirm by message. The plan's job that week is keeping that channel open.
Your plan connects to B-Mobile, with 5G in Thimphu and Paro and 4G LTE in Punakha and the valley towns. Your phone picks the network automatically once the plan is on; there is nothing to choose by hand.
On the mountain passes, the trails, and the roads between valleys, expect gaps on any network. Save maps, documents, and your guide's number before each drive.
Most phones sold since 2019 support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later and most Android flagships from the same window. Check yours before you add a plan; it takes a few seconds. On iPhone, go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID or Available SIM. On Android, go to Settings, Network & Internet, SIMs and look for an option to add an eSIM. On Samsung, dial *#06# and look for an EID.
Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. If you're not sure, carrier-locked vs unlocked: how to tell shows you where to look.
Adding a Bhutan plan doesn't touch your regular SIM. Calls and texts on your usual number keep working exactly as before. The new plan handles data while you're there, and most phones run both at once without you doing anything else. Bank codes and two-factor texts still arrive on your home number, as long as that line stays switched on.
For Asia the alternatives are a home-carrier roaming pass that resets at every border, an airport SIM counter at each arrival, or hotel Wi-Fi that stops at the lobby. A Bhutan plan added at home beats all three: one price agreed before you fly, live the second you land, and the same eSIM, with a plan for wherever the next trip goes.
