Quels voyageurs quelles sont les questions qui nous sont le plus souvent posées ?
Yes. The Caribbean plan covers the Dominican Republic and 24 other islands and destinations, including Puerto Rico and the Turks and Caicos Islands, and your phone switches networks by itself as you move between them. It does not cover Haiti, which has its own plan. Details in does a region plan cover every country in it?
In the Dominican Republic your plan connects to Claro on 4G LTE, which handles maps, messaging, video calls, and streaming; 5G is not part of this plan. Your phone joins the network automatically once the plan is switched on. If it hasn't connected a minute after landing, work through the no-signal checklist.
Yes. Hotspot is allowed on every plan and Claro's 4G covers the whole Punta Cana and Bávaro strip, so a laptop in the room runs on the plan when the resort's connection drops. An unlimited plan, with 5 GB a day at full speed, suits a two-week stay.
At the departure beach, yes; on the boat and on the island, the signal fades on any network. Download the day's confirmations before you leave the resort.
It depends on how much data you want and how many days you're staying. A fixed plan costs less overall; an unlimited plan (5 GB a day at full speed, then slower) works out to a lower daily rate the longer you stay. Every current option and price is in the plan selector at the top of this page.
In the app: open My plans, choose your Dominican Republic plan, and tap Top up. The extra data lands on the same eSIM within a few seconds, with nothing new to add or scan. Full steps are in topping up data without reinstalling the eSIM.
Weeks ahead. The plan's days don't start until you turn it on and connect, so a plan bought a month before departure is still complete when you land. Plans need to be activated within 90 days of purchase. See what plan validity means and when it starts.
If it's eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked, yes, which covers most phones sold since 2019. The one-minute check for iPhone, Android, and Samsung is in is my phone eSIM compatible?

Dominican Republic eSIM for Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, and Samaná
Set it up before you fly. It's live the moment you land, nothing to check, nothing to remember.
Already with us? Get the app on the App Store or Google Play.
The Dominican Republic is all-inclusive beaches at one end and a colonial capital at the other, with a whale bay, a waterfall trail, and a lot of road in between. The best eSIM for the Dominican Republic is the one that's working when you walk out of Punta Cana or Santo Domingo's airport, so the transfer is confirmed and the resort's Wi-Fi password no longer matters.
Below: how a Dominican Republic plan works, how to set it up before you fly, what to expect in the resorts, the capital, and the north, and which plan fits when the trip continues to another island.
Island trips rarely stay on one island, and most travel eSIMs make you start over at every stop. KnowRoaming doesn't. You add the KnowRoaming eSIM, called KR.One, to your phone once, then add a plan per trip: the Dominican Republic this time, the whole Caribbean plan when you're hopping between islands, somewhere else entirely next winter. Nothing to scan again, nothing to delete when you get home.
The plan's days start when you turn it on and connect in the Dominican Republic, not at checkout. Buy it weeks ahead, add it at home, and a delayed flight costs you nothing. The full rule is in what plan validity means and when it starts.
Choose a fixed plan for a set amount of data at the lowest overall price, or an unlimited plan when you'd rather not count. Unlimited plans give you 5 GB a day at full speed, then a slower speed until the allowance resets the next day. If a fixed plan runs low, top up in the app and the extra data lands on the same eSIM.
See it in two minutes: Meet KR.One, iPhone setup with KR.One, or Samsung setup with KR.One.
Do this at home on Wi-Fi. It takes about a minute.
Before you leave
- Get the KnowRoaming app (available on iOS and Android) and choose your Dominican Republic plan.
- Tap Add. First time on this phone? The app adds KR.One and your Dominican Republic plan together. Already have KR.One? Only the plan is added, with nothing to scan.
- Leave data roaming off on the KnowRoaming line until you land, and turn it off on your home line too so it doesn't run up charges in the background. Steps are in turning off roaming on your home line.
When you land
- Turn the plan on in the app, then turn data roaming on for the KnowRoaming line. That setting lives in your phone, so the app can't flip it for you.
- Give the phone a minute to find the network. If nothing happens, turn airplane mode on for 30 seconds and off again.
Prefer a QR code? The checkout page and your confirmation email both carry one; scan it from your phone's settings. Every tap, by device, is in adding your eSIM on iPhone, adding your eSIM on Android, and adding your eSIM on Samsung, or watch the iPhone QR walkthrough or the Samsung QR walkthrough. Still no signal after landing? Work through the no-signal checklist.
Punta Cana's airport is minutes from the resort strip, with transfers arranged by the hotels; Santo Domingo's Las Américas is about half an hour from the Colonial Zone, and Uber runs in the capital with the number you already have. Between the two, the highway takes two and a half hours by bus or private transfer, both booked online.
The Dominican peso is the currency and US dollars are accepted in the resorts; cards work in hotels, malls, and the bigger restaurants, and cash covers the colmados, the guaguas, and the beach vendors. ATMs are easy to find in the towns.
The Punta Cana and Bávaro strip is the all-inclusive coast, with Saona Island catamaran trips, the Hoyo Azul cenote, and the Coco Bongo nights all booked through the resort or an app. Resort Wi-Fi is fine in the lobby and patchy in the room, which is where the plan's hotspot earns its keep; Claro's 4G covers the whole strip.
On the Saona boats and the buggy tours into the countryside, the signal fades; download the day's confirmations before you leave the lobby.
Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone, the oldest European city in the Americas, is a walking day; the Malecón and the Metro fill the rest. Puerto Plata and Cabarete in the north are the surf and kite coast, and the 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua are the canyoning day. The Samaná peninsula is the whale bay, with humpbacks from mid-January to March and boats booked from Samaná town or Las Terrenas.
All the towns have 4G; the waterfalls, the peninsula's back roads, and the boats are the thin spots on every network.
Jarabacoa and Constanza in the central mountains are the cool, green other side of the country, with rafting, waterfalls, and the trek up Pico Duarte, the Caribbean's highest peak, a three-day climb that is offline from the first morning. Bahía de las Águilas in the far south-west is the empty beach reached by boat from a fishing village, and worth the long drive.
The Dominican Republic is on the Caribbean plan, 25 islands and destinations on one plan that also covers Puerto Rico, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the rest of the chain; the phone switches networks by itself when you land. Haiti, across the land border, is sold as its own KnowRoaming plan and is not on the Caribbean plan. A DR-only plan stops at the coast. Read do I need a new plan for every country? for the detail.
June to November is hurricane season, with the real risk from August to October, and the resorts and airlines post changes to their apps first. Carnival runs every Sunday in February with the big parade in Santo Domingo, and the whale season in Samaná overlaps with the driest, busiest months from December to April, when the resorts book out over Christmas and Easter.
Your plan connects to Claro on 4G LTE. There is no 5G on this plan. Coverage is strong in Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata, and the resort coasts, and holds on the main highways. Your phone picks the network automatically once the plan is on; there is nothing to choose by hand.
In the central mountains around Jarabacoa, on the Samaná back roads, and on the boats, expect gaps on any network. Save what you need in town.
Most phones sold since 2019 support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later and most Android flagships from the same window. Check yours before you add a plan; it takes a few seconds. On iPhone, go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID or Available SIM. On Android, go to Settings, Network & Internet, SIMs and look for an option to add an eSIM. On Samsung, dial *#06# and look for an EID.
Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. If you're not sure, carrier-locked vs unlocked: how to tell shows you where to look.
Adding a Dominican Republic plan doesn't touch your regular SIM. Calls and texts on your usual number keep working exactly as before. The new plan handles data while you're there, and most phones run both at once without you doing anything else. Bank codes and two-factor texts still arrive on your home number, as long as that line stays switched on.
On an island the alternatives are thin: a home-carrier roaming pass that treats every island as a new country, a local SIM from a shop that closes early, or resort Wi-Fi that stops at the pool. A Dominican Republic plan added at home beats all three: one price agreed before you fly, live the second you land, and a Caribbean plan if the trip takes in more than one island.
