Quels voyageurs quelles sont les questions qui nous sont le plus souvent posées ?
Yes. The LATAM plan covers Nicaragua and 14 other countries, including Costa Rica and Honduras, and your phone switches networks by itself at the border. Details in does a region plan cover every country in it?
In Nicaragua your plan connects to Claro or Tigo on 4G LTE, which handles maps, messaging, video calls, and streaming; 5G is not part of this plan. Your phone joins the network automatically once the plan is switched on. If it hasn't connected a minute after landing, work through the no-signal checklist.
On Ometepe's villages and Big Corn's settlements, yes, on 4G. On the volcano trails, Little Corn's far side, and the boats, not reliably, on any network. Book the ferries and the pangas in town.
On the LATAM plan, yes, all the way, switching by itself at Peñas Blancas. A Nicaragua-only plan stops at the border; add a Costa Rica plan to the same eSIM before you cross.
It depends on how much data you want and how many days you're staying. A fixed plan costs less overall; an unlimited plan (5 GB a day at full speed, then slower) works out to a lower daily rate the longer you stay. Every current option and price is in the plan selector at the top of this page.
In the app: open My plans, choose your Nicaragua plan, and tap Top up. The extra data lands on the same eSIM within a few seconds, with nothing new to add or scan. Full steps are in topping up data without reinstalling the eSIM.
Weeks ahead. The plan's days don't start until you turn it on and connect, so a plan bought a month before departure is still complete when you land. Plans need to be activated within 90 days of purchase. See what plan validity means and when it starts.
If it's eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked, yes, which covers most phones sold since 2019. The one-minute check for iPhone, Android, and Samsung is in is my phone eSIM compatible?

Nicaragua eSIM for Granada, León, Ometepe, and the Corn Islands
Set it up before you fly. It's live the moment you land, nothing to check, nothing to remember.
Already with us? Get the app on the App Store or Google Play.
Nicaragua is a colonial city an hour from the airport, a volcano island reached by a ferry that leaves when it's full, and two Caribbean islands reached by a plane that leaves when it's ready, and Managua's arrivals hall is the place to have a phone that already works. The best eSIM for Nicaragua is the one added at home, on Wi-Fi, so the shuttle to Granada is confirmed and the Ometepe hostel messaged before the bags come round.
Below: how a Nicaragua plan works, how to set it up before you fly, what to expect in the cities, on the lake, and on the coasts, and which plan fits when Costa Rica or Honduras is on the same trip.
A Central American trip rarely stays in one country; the buses and the border posts are part of it. KnowRoaming is built for that. You add the KnowRoaming eSIM, called KR.One, to your phone once, then add a plan per trip: Nicaragua now, a LATAM plan the year the route runs down the isthmus, anywhere else after that. The eSIM stays; only the plan changes, and nothing needs deleting when you get home.
The plan's days start when you turn it on and connect in Nicaragua, not at checkout. Buy it weeks ahead, add it at home, and a delayed flight costs you nothing. The full rule is in what plan validity means and when it starts.
Choose a fixed plan for a set amount of data at the lowest overall price, or an unlimited plan when you'd rather not count. Unlimited plans give you 5 GB a day at full speed, then a slower speed until the allowance resets the next day. If a fixed plan runs low, top up in the app and the extra data lands on the same eSIM.
See it in two minutes: Meet KR.One, iPhone setup with KR.One, or Samsung setup with KR.One.
Do this at home on Wi-Fi. It takes about a minute.
Before you leave
- Get the KnowRoaming app (available on iOS and Android) and choose your Nicaragua plan.
- Tap Add. First time on this phone? The app adds KR.One and your Nicaragua plan together. Already have KR.One? Only the plan is added, with nothing to scan.
- Leave data roaming off on the KnowRoaming line until you land, and turn it off on your home line too so it doesn't run up charges in the background. Steps are in turning off roaming on your home line.
When you land
- Turn the plan on in the app, then turn data roaming on for the KnowRoaming line. That setting lives in your phone, so the app can't flip it for you.
- Give the phone a minute to find the network. If nothing happens, turn airplane mode on for 30 seconds and off again.
Prefer a QR code? The checkout page and your confirmation email both carry one; scan it from your phone's settings. Every tap, by device, is in adding your eSIM on iPhone, adding your eSIM on Android, and adding your eSIM on Samsung, or watch the iPhone QR walkthrough or the Samsung QR walkthrough. Still no signal after landing? Work through the no-signal checklist.
Augusto C. Sandino airport is about half an hour from central Managua and an hour from Granada, with pre-booked shuttles and taxis the ways out; ride apps are limited, and hotels arrange drivers. The córdoba is the currency and US dollars are accepted nearly everywhere; cards work in the hotels and the bigger restaurants, and cash covers the chicken buses, the markets, and the islands.
Managua is a city most visitors pass through; Granada's colonial streets on Lake Nicaragua and León's cathedral and its volcano-boarding are the two cities people stay in, with the chicken buses and the shuttle vans linking them for cash and by message.
Ometepe, the two-volcano island in Lake Nicaragua, is an hour's ferry from San Jorge and a week for the slow; the climbs up Concepción and Maderas are guided and offline above the farms, and the island's villages have 4G. The ferry schedule slips with the wind; keep the plan on for the message that says it has.
San Juan del Sur is the surf and the sunsets, with the beaches north and south reached by shuttle; the Corn Islands, a flight to Bluefields and on, or the long boat, are the Caribbean, with Little Corn car-free and reached by panga from Big Corn. The mainland coast has 4G in the towns; the Corn Islands have signal at the settlements and none on the boats or the far beaches.
Nicaragua is on the LATAM plan, 15 countries on one plan that also covers Costa Rica and Honduras, switching networks by itself at the Peñas Blancas and Guasaule crossings; the Central American route from Guatemala to Panama runs on it end to end. Nicaragua is also on the Global plan. A Nicaragua-only plan stops at the border. Read do I need a new plan for every country? for the detail.
May to November is the wet season, with afternoon rain, green hills, and the odd road cut; December to April is dry, dusty, and busy, especially over Christmas and Semana Santa, when the beaches and Ometepe's lodges book out. La Purísima in early December fills León and Granada with processions and fireworks, and the hotels and shuttles post changes to WhatsApp first.
Your plan connects to Claro or Tigo on 4G LTE. There is no 5G on this plan. Coverage is strong in Managua, Granada, León, San Juan del Sur, and along the Pan-American highway. Your phone picks the network automatically once the plan is on; there is nothing to choose by hand.
On the volcano trails, the Caribbean coast beyond Bluefields, the Corn Islands' boats, and the rural roads, expect gaps on any network. Save what you need in town.
Most phones sold since 2019 support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later and most Android flagships from the same window. Check yours before you add a plan; it takes a few seconds. On iPhone, go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID or Available SIM. On Android, go to Settings, Network & Internet, SIMs and look for an option to add an eSIM. On Samsung, dial *#06# and look for an EID.
Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. If you're not sure, carrier-locked vs unlocked: how to tell shows you where to look.
Adding a Nicaragua plan doesn't touch your regular SIM. Calls and texts on your usual number keep working exactly as before. The new plan handles data while you're there, and most phones run both at once without you doing anything else. Bank codes and two-factor texts still arrive on your home number, as long as that line stays switched on.
In Central America the alternatives are your home carrier's roaming rate, often unavailable outside the capital; a local SIM at each border with a new number each time; or hostel Wi-Fi that is fine until you're on a bus. A Nicaragua plan added at home beats all three: one price agreed before you fly, live the second you land, and a LATAM plan if the route crosses borders.
