Add your plan on Android

Before you start

KnowRoaming plans work on iPhone XS and later and on most Android flagships released since 2019. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. Check your exact model on the device compatibility page before you buy.

It's fine to add your plan days before you fly, as long as you have a stable connection to do it. Leave data roaming off until you land. Nothing on your plan starts until you connect abroad, so there's no downside to adding early and switching on later.

Through the app

1. 1Open the KnowRoaming app and go to My plans.
2. 2Select your device and tap Add a plan. For a new device, tap Add another device and plan.
3. 3On "Let's complete auto setup," tap Continue.
4. 4On "Install your eSIM," tap Continue. Keep the app open and stay connected; it takes about a minute.
5. 5When it's done, follow the two steps on screen to turn on data roaming.
6. 6Tap Continue, then Done. Your plan is on your phone.

The app can add the plan, but only your phone's settings can switch roaming on. See Turn on data roaming for your plan on Android.

If it gets interrupted, you'll see "Couldn't add your eSIM to this device." Your plan is safe, nothing was charged, and you can try again from My plans.

From Settings with the QR code

Use this if you bought your plan on knowroaming.com and don't have the app. Your QR code is in your confirmation email and on your order page. Open it on another screen, or have the SM-DP+ address and activation code ready to type.

1. 1Open Settings and tap Network & internet.
2. 2Tap SIMs. On older Android versions this shows as Mobile network.
3. 3Tap Add eSIM. On Pixel this shows as Add SIM, then Download a SIM instead.
4. 4Tap Scan QR code and point the camera at the code.
5. 5Can't scan it? Choose Enter code manually and type the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your email.
6. 6If Android asks which SIM to use for mobile data, keep your home SIM for now; switch when you land.
7. 7Optional: tap the new eSIM under SIMs and give it a name you'll recognize, such as KnowRoaming.

The labels above are Pixel's. Other brands word them differently; the section below says where to look.

When you land

Turn the KnowRoaming line on, turn on data roaming for it, and point your data at it. The taps are in Turn on data roaming for your plan on Android. Give your phone a minute to connect once you land. Still nothing? Switch on Airplane Mode for 30 seconds, then switch it off again.

Setting your APN

Most destinations need no APN. If yours is on this list, add it before you connect:

No APN needed

Enter the value in lowercase with no spaces. On Android: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > your KnowRoaming eSIM > Access Point Names (older versions: Mobile network > Advanced > Access Point Names). If the APN is listed, select it. If not, tap the menu icon, choose New APN, enter any name you'll recognize, enter the value under APN, then save and select it.

Good to know

• Your plan is data only, with no phone number, calls, or SMS. Calls and texts keep using your home number.
• Your plan starts when you connect in a supported country, not when you buy. Your validity days count from that first connection. Unused data expires at the end of your validity period. It doesn't roll over.
• Data Saver holds back apps on mobile data. Turn it off in Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver while you travel.
• When you get home, turn data roaming off and set your data back to your regular SIM, so you don't pick up roaming charges. Your KnowRoaming plan stays on your phone, ready for your next trip.
• Settings names and screens vary a little by brand and Android version. Checked on a Pixel on Android 16.
