Welke reizigers wat vragen jullie ons het vaakst?
The Oceania plan: both countries on one plan, switching networks by itself when you land. If the trip also stops in Asia, the Asia plan covers both and 26 more. The Pacific islands are on neither; Fiji is on the Global plan. Details in does a region plan cover every country in it?
In New Zealand your plan connects to Spark, with 5G in the cities and larger towns and 4G LTE along the highways. Your phone joins the network automatically once the plan is switched on. If it hasn't connected a minute after landing, work through the no-signal checklist.
In Te Anau, yes. On the Milford road and at the sound, mostly not, on any network. Download the route and the cruise booking before you leave Te Anau.
No, on any network, from the trailhead on. The huts have no power or signal. Carry or hire a personal locator beacon, download the track, and let people at home know the dates.
A fixed plan costs less overall; an unlimited plan (a daily high-speed allowance, then slower) works out to a lower daily rate the longer you stay. The price depends on how much data you want and how many days you're staying; every current option and price is in the plan selector at the top of this page.
In the app: open My plans, choose your New Zealand plan, and tap Top up. The extra data lands on the same eSIM within a few seconds, with nothing new to add or scan. Full steps are in topping up data without reinstalling the eSIM.
Weeks ahead. The plan's days don't start until you turn it on and connect, so a plan bought a month before departure is still complete when you land. Plans need to be activated within 90 days of purchase. See what plan validity means and when it starts.
No, on any network. On the Milford road, the West Coast, the Catlins, and every Great Walk, expect long stretches with no signal on any network.
New Zealand eSIM for Auckland, Queenstown, and the Great Walks
Set it up before you fly. It's live the moment you land, nothing to check, nothing to remember.

New Zealand is a campervan, a hut booking made months ago, and a road where the map goes blank between towns, and the arrivals hall at Auckland is the place to have a phone that already works. The best eSIM for New Zealand is the one added at home, on Wi-Fi, so the SkyDrive bus is booked and the campervan pickup is confirmed before the biosecurity queue moves.
Below: how a New Zealand plan works, how to set it up before you fly, what to expect in the cities, on the roads, and on the trails, and which of three multi-country plans fits when Australia or Asia is on the same ticket.
Trips to this part of the world are long-haul and often two countries in one go. KnowRoaming is built for that. You add the KnowRoaming eSIM, called KR.One, to your phone once, then add a plan per trip: New Zealand now, an Oceania plan when New Zealand is on the same ticket, Japan on the way home next year. The eSIM stays; only the plan changes, and nothing needs deleting when you get home.
The plan's days start when you turn it on and connect in New Zealand, not at checkout. Buy it weeks ahead, add it at home, and a delayed flight costs you nothing. The full rule is in what plan validity means and when it starts.
Choose a fixed plan for a set amount of data at the lowest overall price, or an unlimited plan when you'd rather not count. Unlimited plans give you a daily high-speed allowance, then a slower speed until the allowance resets the next day. If a fixed plan runs low, top up in the app and the extra data lands on the same eSIM. Hotspot works on every plan, fixed or unlimited; a laptop or a travel partner's phone shares the same eSIM data.
See it in two minutes: Meet KR.One, iPhone setup with KR.One, or Samsung setup with KR.One.
Do this at home on Wi-Fi. It takes about a minute.
Before you leave
- Get the KnowRoaming app (available on iOS and Android) and choose your New Zealand plan.
- Tap Add. First time on this phone? The app adds KR.One and your New Zealand plan together. Already have KR.One? Only the plan is added, with nothing to scan.
- Leave data roaming off on the KnowRoaming line until you land, and turn it off on your home line too so it doesn't run up charges in the background. Steps are in turning off roaming on your home line.
When you land
- Turn the plan on in the app, then turn data roaming on for the KnowRoaming line. That setting lives in your phone, so the app can't flip it for you.
- Give the phone a minute to find the network. If nothing happens, turn airplane mode on for 30 seconds and off again.
Prefer a QR code? The checkout page and your confirmation email both carry one; scan it from your phone's settings. Every tap is in how to add your plan, start to finish, or watch the iPhone QR walkthrough or the Samsung QR walkthrough. Still no signal after landing? Work through the no-signal checklist.
Auckland's airport is about 45 minutes from the center by the SkyDrive bus or an Uber, which works with the number you already have; Christchurch's is about half an hour, and Queenstown's sits on the lake. Most visitors need an electronic travel authority arranged before the flight; keep it saved offline. New Zealand is close to cashless, with cards and phone wallets everywhere, and the AT HOP and Bee cards run the city buses.
The campervan is the national vehicle, booked months ahead for the summer, and the freedom-camping apps and the holiday-park bookings run on data; the distances are shorter than Australia's and the roads slower.
Rotorua's geothermal parks, Hobbiton's timed tours, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, the Bay of Islands, and Wellington's Te Papa are the North Island, with Spark's 5G in the cities and 4G along the state highways. The Tongariro crossing has signal at the car parks and little on the ridge; the shuttles book online and confirm by message.
Queenstown's adventure bookings, Milford Sound's cruises, Mount Cook's trails, the glaciers at Franz Josef and Fox, and the Abel Tasman coast track are the South Island; the road to Milford, the West Coast highway, and the Catlins have long stretches with no signal on any network. Download maps, save the bookings, and treat the drives as offline; the towns bring the plan back.
The Milford, Routeburn, Kepler, and the other Great Walks are hut-to-hut tramps booked on the Department of Conservation's site the day bookings open, months ahead, and they are offline from the trailhead; the huts have no power and no signal. Carry a personal locator beacon or hire one, download the track, and let people at home know the dates.
New Zealand sits on three multi-country plans. The Oceania plan covers New Zealand and Australia, the right choice when both are on the ticket; the Asia plan covers 28 countries including both and the usual Asian stopovers; the Global plan covers most of the world. Fiji has its own plan and is on the Global plan; Samoa and the other Pacific islands have their own plans and are on none of them. A New Zealand-only plan stops at the coast. Read do I need a new plan for every country? for the detail.
Your plan connects to Spark, with 5G in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown, Dunedin, and the larger towns and 4G LTE along the state highways. Your phone picks the network automatically once the plan is on; there is nothing to choose by hand.
On the Milford road, the West Coast, the Catlins, and every Great Walk, expect long stretches with no signal on any network. Save what you need in town.
Most current iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, and Google Pixel phones support eSIM. Check yours before you add a plan; it takes a few seconds. On iPhone, go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID or Available SIM. On Android, go to Settings, Network & Internet, SIMs and look for an option to add an eSIM. On Samsung, dial *#06# and look for an EID.
Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. If you're not sure, the same check shows you where to look.
Keep your home number too
Adding a New Zealand plan doesn't touch your regular SIM. Calls and texts on your usual number keep working exactly as before. The new plan handles data while you're there, and most phones run both at once without you doing anything else. Bank codes and two-factor texts still arrive on your home number, as long as that line stays switched on.
One plan. No roaming surprises. Live the moment you land.
For Australia and New Zealand the alternatives are a home-carrier roaming pass that gets expensive over a long stay, a prepaid SIM from a supermarket that comes with a new number, or hostel and hotel Wi-Fi in a country where the bus, the beach parking, and the trail map all need data. A New Zealand plan added at home beats all three: one price agreed before you fly, live the second you land, and an Oceania plan if both countries are on the ticket.
Real travelers rate KnowRoaming 4.5 out of 5 on Reviews.io. More than a decade in travel connectivity, more than 200 destinations, and support that doesn't clock off: WhatsApp and live chat, any time, any day.

Very efficient!

Works like a bomb. The new app layout needs to be easier to navigate. Especially when trying to topup in a hurry.
