哪些旅行者 大家最常问我们什么?
No. Both are separate KnowRoaming destinations with their own plans and, in the mainland's case, its own internet rules. The Asia plan covers Hong Kong, Macao, China, and 25 more countries on one plan. Details in does a region plan cover every country in it?
In Hong Kong your plan connects to 3 Hong Kong, with 5G across the city and 4G LTE on the outlying islands. Your phone joins the network automatically once the plan is switched on. If it hasn't connected a minute after landing, work through the no-signal checklist.
Yes, normally. Hong Kong's internet is not subject to the mainland's blocks. They stop working the moment you cross into Shenzhen unless you have a VPN set up.
Yes. The Octopus app and the Apple Wallet version load over the plan's data with a foreign card, and the MTR gates also take a contactless bank card. Your home number keeps working on your home SIM for the verification texts.
It depends on how much data you want and how many days you're staying. A fixed plan costs less overall; an unlimited plan (5 GB a day at full speed, then slower) works out to a lower daily rate the longer you stay. Every current option and price is in the plan selector at the top of this page.
In the app: open My plans, choose your Hong Kong plan, and tap Top up. The extra data lands on the same eSIM within a few seconds, with nothing new to add or scan. Full steps are in topping up data without reinstalling the eSIM.
Weeks ahead. The plan's days don't start until you turn it on and connect, so a plan bought a month before departure is still complete when you land. Plans need to be activated within 90 days of purchase. See what plan validity means and when it starts.
If it's eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked, yes, which covers most phones sold since 2019. The one-minute check for iPhone, Android, and Samsung is in is my phone eSIM compatible?

Hong Kong eSIM for the city, the islands, and the trip across to Macao
Set it up before you fly. It's live the moment you land, nothing to check, nothing to remember.
Already with us? Get the app on the App Store or Google Play.
Hong Kong runs on an Octopus card in your phone's wallet, an MTR that reaches everywhere, and an internet that works the way it does at home, which makes it the easiest city in Asia to land in with a working eSIM. The best eSIM for Hong Kong is the one added at home, on Wi-Fi, so the Airport Express is tapped through and the first dim sum is booked before the train reaches Kowloon.
Below: how a Hong Kong plan works, how to set it up before you fly, what to expect in the city, on the trails, and on the outlying islands, and what changes when the trip continues to Macao or across the border into mainland China.
Asian trips tend to be multi-stop, and most travel eSIMs want a fresh profile at every airport. KnowRoaming doesn't. You add the KnowRoaming eSIM, called KR.One, to your phone once, then add a plan per trip: one country for a single-city break, the Asia plan when the route runs through several, and next year's trip on the same eSIM. Nothing to scan again, nothing to delete when you get home.
The plan's days start when you turn it on and connect in Hong Kong, not at checkout. Buy it weeks ahead, add it at home, and a delayed flight costs you nothing. The full rule is in what plan validity means and when it starts.
Choose a fixed plan for a set amount of data at the lowest overall price, or an unlimited plan when you'd rather not count. Unlimited plans give you 5 GB a day at full speed, then a slower speed until the allowance resets the next day. If a fixed plan runs low, top up in the app and the extra data lands on the same eSIM.
See it in two minutes: Meet KR.One, iPhone setup with KR.One, or Samsung setup with KR.One.
Do this at home on Wi-Fi. It takes about a minute.
Before you leave
- Get the KnowRoaming app (available on iOS and Android) and choose your Hong Kong plan.
- Tap Add. First time on this phone? The app adds KR.One and your Hong Kong plan together. Already have KR.One? Only the plan is added, with nothing to scan.
- Leave data roaming off on the KnowRoaming line until you land, and turn it off on your home line too so it doesn't run up charges in the background. Steps are in turning off roaming on your home line.
When you land
- Turn the plan on in the app, then turn data roaming on for the KnowRoaming line. That setting lives in your phone, so the app can't flip it for you.
- Give the phone a minute to find the network. If nothing happens, turn airplane mode on for 30 seconds and off again.
Prefer a QR code? The checkout page and your confirmation email both carry one; scan it from your phone's settings. Every tap, by device, is in adding your eSIM on iPhone, adding your eSIM on Android, and adding your eSIM on Samsung, or watch the iPhone QR walkthrough or the Samsung QR walkthrough. Still no signal after landing? Work through the no-signal checklist.
The Airport Express reaches Kowloon in about half an hour and Hong Kong station in 24, and the MTR, the trams, the Star Ferry, and the buses all run on the Octopus card, which loads into Apple Wallet or the Octopus app; a contactless bank card works on the MTR gates too. Uber runs in the city, and the red taxis take cash and Octopus.
The Hong Kong dollar is the currency, cards and Octopus cover nearly everything, and a little cash helps at the dai pai dongs and the markets. Google, WhatsApp, and the rest work normally; Hong Kong's internet is not subject to the mainland's blocks.
The Peak Tram, the Star Ferry across the harbor, Temple Street, and the Tian Tan Buddha on Lantau are the set pieces, with timed tickets online for the tram and the cable car. Hong Kong is also a hiking city: the Dragon's Back, Lantau Peak, and the MacLehose Trail are all reached by MTR and bus, and 3's 5G holds on most of the ridges, with drops in the deeper country parks.
Lamma, Cheung Chau, and Peng Chau are a ferry from Central, car-free, and covered on 4G in the villages with gaps on the far trails; the ferries are on Octopus and the schedules in the operators' apps. Sai Kung's beaches and the geopark boat trips are the other escape, with the signal fading offshore.
Macao is an hour by ferry or bus across the bridge and a separate KnowRoaming destination with its own plan; Shenzhen and the rest of mainland China are a different network and a different internet, covered by a China plan, and the mainland blocks Google, WhatsApp, and more. Hong Kong, Macao, and China are all on the Asia plan, 28 countries on one plan that switches networks by itself at each crossing, which is the tidy answer for a Pearl River Delta trip. A Hong Kong-only plan stops at the border. Read do I need a new plan for every country? for the detail.
Hong Kong is a business city and a transit hub, and a 36-hour stopover is a common shape: a plan that starts counting when you connect suits it, and a one-day plan covers a layover in town. For a posting of weeks, an unlimited plan, with 5 GB a day at full speed, covers video calls and the hotspot; fixed plans suit the stopover. Both are on the plan selector at the top of this page.
Your plan connects to 3 Hong Kong, with 5G across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories towns and 4G LTE on the outlying islands and in the country parks. Your phone picks the network automatically once the plan is on; there is nothing to choose by hand.
In the deeper country parks, on the far island trails, and offshore, expect gaps on any network. Save what you need before the ferry.
Most phones sold since 2019 support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later and most Android flagships from the same window. Check yours before you add a plan; it takes a few seconds. On iPhone, go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID or Available SIM. On Android, go to Settings, Network & Internet, SIMs and look for an option to add an eSIM. On Samsung, dial *#06# and look for an EID.
Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. If you're not sure, carrier-locked vs unlocked: how to tell shows you where to look.
Adding a Hong Kong plan doesn't touch your regular SIM. Calls and texts on your usual number keep working exactly as before. The new plan handles data while you're there, and most phones run both at once without you doing anything else. Bank codes and two-factor texts still arrive on your home number, as long as that line stays switched on.
For Asia the alternatives are a home-carrier roaming pass that resets at every border, an airport SIM counter at each arrival, or hotel Wi-Fi that stops at the lobby. A Hong Kong plan added at home beats all three: one price agreed before you fly, live the second you land, and one plan across every stop on the route.
