An add error means the phone refused the eSIM, and the wording tells you why. The causes below are in the order they turn out to be true, with the message each one shows. Nothing is charged for a failed attempt, and your plan waits in My plans.
If it gets interrupted, you'll see "Couldn't add your eSIM to this device." Your plan is safe, nothing was charged, and you can try again from My plans.
Adding needs a steady Wi-Fi or data connection for about a minute. Move closer to the router, or switch from hotel Wi-Fi to your home SIM's mobile data, and start again from My plans. Shows as "Cellular plan cannot be added" on iPhone, or a generic "Couldn't download" on Android.
Each QR code adds one eSIM to one device, once. If the plan is already on this phone, you'll find a KnowRoaming line you didn't expect in your SIM list. See "This code has already been used" error.
A locked phone refuses any second carrier's eSIM, usually as "Invalid SIM," "SIM Not Supported," or "This eSIM is not supported." See Carrier-locked vs. unlocked: How to tell which you have.
Phones hold a limited number of eSIMs. Remove an old or expired one from another provider, then try again. Shows as "storage full" or similar on Samsung. See Adding an eSIM when your phone already has two.
The add checks a certificate, and a wrong clock fails it. Set date and time to automatic and try again. See Adding fails when your phone's date and time are wrong.
Some regional Galaxy variants don't support eSIM even within the same model line. The device compatibility page lists the ones that do.
The add worked; the line hasn't registered yet. Restart the phone. If it persists, turn Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds and off again, then check data roaming is on for the line.

How to use an eSIM while backpacking is surprisingly simple. First, ensure your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible. Then, download the provider's app (like KnowRoaming's). You can choose your plan and add the eSIM digitally through the app, often by scanning a QR code. Once added, just enable data roaming for your eSIM, and you're ready to go, no physical cards or airport kiosks needed.
No swapping SIM cards, no kiosk queues at the airport, set it up once and it's ready every time after.
With KnowRoaming, setup takes less than five minutes. Using the automatic setup in the KnowRoaming app, you can download and add your eSIM in just a few taps. This makes it one of the fastest and most reliable ways to get connected before your trip.
Simply add the eSIM profile on your unlocked, eSIM-compatible device before you travel. Once you arrive in a supported country, turn on your eSIM, and you'll be connected!
