Yes. A legacy eSIM with data left keeps working until the plan runs out or expires, whichever comes first. Nothing changes on your phone, and you don't need to do anything.
A legacy eSIM is one you added before KnowRoaming moved to KR.One, when each eSIM worked for one destination (what a legacy eSIM is). Your account shows it under My plans, behind Show legacy eSIMs, with the data left and the expiry date.
Keep using it the way you always have: data roaming on for the KnowRoaming line, roaming off for your home SIM. When the plan ends, the eSIM stays on your account as a record, and your receipts stay in Order history.
What you can't do is add more data to it. Top-ups and new plans go on a KR.One eSIM, which you add once and keep for every trip after (why). If you run out mid-trip, buy your next plan as usual. The app adds a KR.One eSIM to your phone in about a minute, and your new plan attaches to it.
The data left on a legacy eSIM doesn't transfer to KR.One, so use it up first. When you're ready to switch, the steps are in Moving from a legacy eSIM to KR.One.
How to use an eSIM while backpacking is surprisingly simple. First, ensure your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible. Then, download the provider's app (like KnowRoaming's). You can choose your plan and add the eSIM digitally through the app, often by scanning a QR code. Once added, just enable data roaming for your eSIM, and you're ready to go, no physical cards or airport kiosks needed.
No swapping SIM cards, no kiosk queues at the airport, set it up once and it's ready every time after.
With KnowRoaming, setup takes less than five minutes. Using the automatic setup in the KnowRoaming app, you can download and add your eSIM in just a few taps. This makes it one of the fastest and most reliable ways to get connected before your trip.
Simply add the eSIM profile on your unlocked, eSIM-compatible device before you travel. Once you arrive in a supported country, turn on your eSIM, and you'll be connected!
