Calls and Wi-Fi calling while using your KnowRoaming eSIM

Your plan is data only, with no phone number, calls, or SMS. Calls and texts keep using your home number. Regular calls abroad are charged by your home carrier at its roaming rate. Calling apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Teams, and Zoom run over your plan's data as normal. Wi-Fi calling on your home number works over that data too, if your home carrier supports it.

More detail

Wi-Fi calling is your home carrier's feature, not something the plan turns on or off. If your carrier has it enabled, your phone treats the KnowRoaming data connection like any Wi-Fi network. Calls on your regular number then run over it, with no roaming charge for the call. Check with your carrier that it's enabled before you fly.

If Wi-Fi calling sticks on "connecting," the network you're on is usually blocking it. Hotel and public Wi-Fi often block the traffic Wi-Fi calling needs while browsing works fine. Switch to the KnowRoaming line's data, or to another Wi-Fi network. Home Wi-Fi and hotspots are less likely to block it. If it still won't connect, a call over your home line, or a calling app, is the fallback.

If calls are choppy or drop, it depends which line they're on. Calls on your regular number use your home carrier's signal in that spot. Move outdoors or near a window, and keep the home line switched on; a line that's off gets no calls at all. Calls through an app use your plan's data. Check the KnowRoaming line is selected for data, and turn off Low Data Mode or Data Saver. If one spot is always bad, switch networks; see Switch networks manually when the automatic pick is weak. In mainland China, some calling apps are restricted at the network level regardless of provider.
