No. Macao has its own networks and its own plan. The Asia plan covers Macao, Hong Kong, mainland China, and 25 more countries on one plan and switches by itself at the pier. Details in does a region plan cover every country in it?
In Macao your plan connects to 3 Macau on 4G LTE, which handles maps, messaging, video calls, and streaming; 5G is not part of this plan. Your phone joins the network automatically once the plan is switched on. If it hasn't connected a minute after arriving, work through the no-signal checklist.
Yes, normally. Macao's internet is not subject to the mainland's blocks. They stop working the moment you cross into Zhuhai unless you have a VPN set up.
Either the Asia plan, which covers both, or a Macao plan added to the same eSIM as your Hong Kong plan. The Macao plan starts counting only when you connect on the Macao side, so a day trip uses one day.
It depends on how much data you want and how many days you're staying. A fixed plan costs less overall; an unlimited plan (5 GB a day at full speed, then slower) works out to a lower daily rate the longer you stay. Every current option and price is in the plan selector at the top of this page.
In the app: open My plans, choose your Macao plan, and tap Top up. The extra data lands on the same eSIM within a few seconds, with nothing new to add or scan. Full steps are in topping up data without reinstalling the eSIM.
Weeks ahead. The plan's days don't start until you turn it on and connect, so a plan bought a month before departure is still complete when you land. Plans need to be activated within 90 days of purchase. See what plan validity means and when it starts.
If it's eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked, yes, which covers most phones sold since 2019. The one-minute check for iPhone, Android, and Samsung is in is my phone eSIM compatible?

Macao eSIM for the casinos, the old town, and the hop from Hong Kong
Set it up before you fly. It's live the moment you land, nothing to check, nothing to remember.
Already with us? Get the app on the App Store or Google Play.
Macao is an hour from Hong Kong by ferry or bus, a different territory with its own currency, its own networks, and an old town that survived the casinos, and a Hong Kong plan stops at the pier. The best eSIM for Macao is one that's ready before the ferry docks or the plane lands, so the free casino shuttle and the egg-tart queue are found without a search for Wi-Fi.
Below: how a Macao plan works, how to set it up before you travel, what to expect on the peninsula and in Cotai, and why a Pearl River Delta trip usually wants the Asia plan.
Asian trips tend to be multi-stop, and most travel eSIMs want a fresh profile at every airport. KnowRoaming doesn't. You add the KnowRoaming eSIM, called KR.One, to your phone once, then add a plan per trip: one country for a single-city break, the Asia plan when the route runs through several, and next year's trip on the same eSIM. Nothing to scan again, nothing to delete when you get home.
The plan's days start when you turn it on and connect in Macao, not at checkout. Buy it weeks ahead, add it at home, and a delayed flight costs you nothing. The full rule is in what plan validity means and when it starts.
Choose a fixed plan for a set amount of data at the lowest overall price, or an unlimited plan when you'd rather not count. Unlimited plans give you 5 GB a day at full speed, then a slower speed until the allowance resets the next day. If a fixed plan runs low, top up in the app and the extra data lands on the same eSIM.
See it in two minutes: Meet KR.One, iPhone setup with KR.One, or Samsung setup with KR.One.
Do this at home on Wi-Fi. It takes about a minute.
Before you leave
- Get the KnowRoaming app (available on iOS and Android) and choose your Macao plan.
- Tap Add. First time on this phone? The app adds KR.One and your Macao plan together. Already have KR.One? Only the plan is added, with nothing to scan.
- Leave data roaming off on the KnowRoaming line until you land, and turn it off on your home line too so it doesn't run up charges in the background. Steps are in turning off roaming on your home line.
When you land
- Turn the plan on in the app, then turn data roaming on for the KnowRoaming line. That setting lives in your phone, so the app can't flip it for you.
- Give the phone a minute to find the network. If nothing happens, turn airplane mode on for 30 seconds and off again.
Prefer a QR code? The checkout page and your confirmation email both carry one; scan it from your phone's settings. Every tap, by device, is in adding your eSIM on iPhone, adding your eSIM on Android, and adding your eSIM on Samsung, or watch the iPhone QR walkthrough or the Samsung QR walkthrough. Still no signal after landing? Work through the no-signal checklist.
The ferries from Hong Kong take about an hour, the bus across the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge a little less, and the airport sits on Taipa with flights from across Asia; from any of them the free casino shuttles reach the peninsula and Cotai, and the buses take the Macau Pass or exact change. Ride-hailing is limited; taxis take cash.
The pataca is the currency and Hong Kong dollars are accepted everywhere at par; cards work in the hotels, the casinos, and the malls, and cash covers the street food and the buses. Macao's internet is not subject to the mainland's blocks; Google and WhatsApp work normally.
The Historic Centre, a UNESCO site, runs from Senado Square up to the Ruins of St. Paul's and the Monte Fort, with the A-Ma temple and the Mandarin's House at the other end; the egg tarts at Lord Stow's on Coloane and the pork-chop buns in Taipa Village are the pilgrimages. 3 Macau's 4G covers the whole territory; there is nowhere in Macao that is out of range.
Coloane village in the south, with its Portuguese chapel, the panda pavilion, and Hac Sa beach, and the Taipa houses museum are the quiet corners; the Kun Iam statue and the science center fill the waterfront. A 36-hour stopover covers most of it on foot and by shuttle.
Cotai's casino resorts, the Venetian, the Parisian, and the rest, are a city of their own, with the House of Dancing Water and the concert arenas selling tickets online and the shuttles running between them all night. The Macau Tower's bungee and the Grand Prix in November are the other draws; the Grand Prix closes the peninsula's roads and fills the hotels.
Hong Kong is a separate KnowRoaming destination with its own plan, and Zhuhai and the rest of mainland China, across the border gates at Portas do Cerco, are another again, with different networks and the mainland's internet blocks; the China page has the detail. Macao, Hong Kong, and China are all on the Asia plan, 28 countries on one plan that switches networks by itself at each crossing, which is the tidy answer for a delta trip. Macao is also on the Global plan. A Macao-only plan stops at the pier. Read do I need a new plan for every country? for the detail.
Macao is a convention city, with the Cotai resorts hosting trade shows year-round, and a lot of visits are two days of meetings and a show; 3 Macau's 4G handles video calls from any hotel. Chinese New Year and the Golden Weeks in May and October fill the ferries and the hotels; the Grand Prix in November and the food festival the same month are the autumn peaks.
Your plan connects to 3 Macau on 4G LTE. There is no 5G on this plan. Coverage is complete across the peninsula, Taipa, Cotai, and Coloane, including inside the casino resorts. Your phone picks the network automatically once the plan is on; there is nothing to choose by hand.
On the ferry mid-crossing and on the bridge's long spans, the phone may drift between Macao and Hong Kong networks; give it a minute at the pier.
Most phones sold since 2019 support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later and most Android flagships from the same window. Check yours before you add a plan; it takes a few seconds. On iPhone, go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID or Available SIM. On Android, go to Settings, Network & Internet, SIMs and look for an option to add an eSIM. On Samsung, dial *#06# and look for an EID.
Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. If you're not sure, carrier-locked vs unlocked: how to tell shows you where to look.
Adding a Macao plan doesn't touch your regular SIM. Calls and texts on your usual number keep working exactly as before. The new plan handles data while you're there, and most phones run both at once without you doing anything else. Bank codes and two-factor texts still arrive on your home number, as long as that line stays switched on.
For Asia the alternatives are a home-carrier roaming pass that resets at every border, an airport SIM counter at each arrival, or hotel Wi-Fi that stops at the lobby. A Macao plan added at home beats all three: one price agreed before you fly, live the second you land, and one plan across every stop on the route.
