Adding your plan without Wi-Fi: mobile data works too
Wi-Fi makes it easier but isn't required. Any steady connection works for the minute the add takes. That includes your home SIM's mobile data, a hotspot from another phone, or café or airport Wi-Fi. What matters is that the connection holds until the app says the plan is on your phone.

At home, turn on mobile data on your home SIM and follow your add guide as usual: Add your plan on iPhone, Add your plan on Samsung, or Add your plan on Android. The download uses your home SIM's data for about a minute. After that, the new line is on your phone with nothing more to download.
Already abroad with no data? Use any Wi-Fi you can reach, or a hotspot from a travel companion's phone. Your home SIM's data also works, but your carrier charges its roaming rate for that minute. Turn it off again straight after.
If it gets interrupted, you'll see "Couldn't add your eSIM to this device." Your plan is safe, nothing was charged, and you can try again from My plans.
