Two things make it easier. If your home SIM has mobile data abroad, you can add the plan without Wi-Fi; the download takes about a minute of your home carrier's data, so turn it off again straight after. We still suggest adding the plan before you fly when you can. You land connected instead of hunting for Wi-Fi, and you check the settings calmly rather than in the arrivals hall. Your plan starts when you connect in a supported country, not when you buy. Your validity days count from that first connection. Unused data expires at the end of your validity period. It doesn't roll over.
