Welke reizigers wat vragen jullie ons het vaakst?
Yes. The Europe plan covers Hungary and 48 other countries, including all seven of its neighbors, and your phone switches networks by itself at the border. Choose it over a Hungary-only plan if Vienna or Bratislava is on the route. Details in does a region plan cover every country in it?
In Hungary your plan connects to Yettel or One, with 5G in the cities and 4G LTE elsewhere. Your phone joins the network automatically once the plan is switched on. If it hasn't connected a minute after landing, work through the no-signal checklist.
Only on the Europe plan, which covers Austria; a Hungary-only plan stops at the border. If you're already in Budapest on a Hungary plan, add an Austria plan to the same eSIM before you board.
Yes, with 5G in Siófok and Balatonfüred and 4G around the lake. The vineyard back roads on the northern shore are the thin spots.
It depends on how much data you want and how many days you're staying. A fixed plan costs less overall; an unlimited plan (5 GB a day at full speed, then slower) works out to a lower daily rate the longer you stay. Every current option and price is in the plan selector at the top of this page.
In the app: open My plans, choose your Hungary plan, and tap Top up. The extra data lands on the same eSIM within a few seconds, with nothing new to add or scan. Full steps are in topping up data without reinstalling the eSIM.
Weeks ahead. The plan's days don't start until you turn it on and connect, so a plan bought a month before departure is still complete when you land. Plans need to be activated within 90 days of purchase. See what plan validity means and when it starts.
If it's eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked, yes, which covers most phones sold since 2019. The one-minute check for iPhone, Android, and Samsung is in is my phone eSIM compatible?

Hungary eSIM for Budapest, the baths, Lake Balaton, and the Danube
Set it up before you fly. It's live the moment you land, nothing to check, nothing to remember.
Already with us? Get the app on the App Store or Google Play.
Budapest runs on an app for the metro, an online slot for the baths, and a currency that is not the euro, and the 100E bus from the airport is bought on the phone before you find the stop. The best eSIM for Hungary is the one added at home, on Wi-Fi, so the ride into Pest and the evening at Széchenyi are sorted while the bags arrive.
Below: how a Hungary plan works, how to set it up before you fly, what to expect in Budapest, at Lake Balaton, and in the wine country, and why a trip that touches Vienna or Bratislava wants the Europe plan.
Most travel eSIMs make you start over for every country, which in Europe means a new QR code every few days. KnowRoaming doesn't. You add the KnowRoaming eSIM, called KR.One, to your phone once, and from then on each trip is a plan you add to it: Hungary now, Austria in the spring, the whole continent on a Europe plan when the itinerary gets ambitious. Nothing to scan again, nothing to delete when you get home.
The plan's days start when you turn it on and connect in Hungary, not at checkout. Buy it weeks ahead, add it at home, and a delayed flight costs you nothing. The full rule is in what plan validity means and when it starts.
Choose a fixed plan for a set amount of data at the lowest overall price, or an unlimited plan when you'd rather not count. Unlimited plans give you 5 GB a day at full speed, then a slower speed until the allowance resets the next day. If a fixed plan runs low, top up in the app and the extra data lands on the same eSIM.
See it in two minutes: Meet KR.One, iPhone setup with KR.One, or Samsung setup with KR.One.
Do this at home on Wi-Fi. It takes about a minute.
Before you leave
- Get the KnowRoaming app (available on iOS and Android) and choose your Hungary plan.
- Tap Add. First time on this phone? The app adds KR.One and your Hungary plan together. Already have KR.One? Only the plan is added, with nothing to scan.
- Leave data roaming off on the KnowRoaming line until you land, and turn it off on your home line too so it doesn't run up charges in the background. Steps are in turning off roaming on your home line.
When you land
- Turn the plan on in the app, then turn data roaming on for the KnowRoaming line. That setting lives in your phone, so the app can't flip it for you.
- Give the phone a minute to find the network. If nothing happens, turn airplane mode on for 30 seconds and off again.
Prefer a QR code? The checkout page and your confirmation email both carry one; scan it from your phone's settings. Every tap, by device, is in adding your eSIM on iPhone, adding your eSIM on Android, and adding your eSIM on Samsung, or watch the iPhone QR walkthrough or the Samsung QR walkthrough. Still no signal after landing? Work through the no-signal checklist.
Budapest's airport has the 100E express bus to Deák tér in 30 to 45 minutes, with the ticket in the BudapestGO app, and Bolt runs from the terminal with the number you already have. The metro, trams, and buses share the same app, and the tram along the Danube is the sightseeing tour that costs a ticket.
Hungary keeps the forint, so prices are in forints; cards are accepted nearly everywhere in the capital and cash helps at the markets and in the country. The Parliament tour, the baths, the House of Terror, and the Christmas markets' skating rink all sell slots online.
Budapest's airport also sits a taxi ride from the M3 metro at Kőbánya-Kispest, the older route in, and the official airport taxis take cards; the 100E is the cheaper choice unless you're carrying a lot.
Széchenyi and Gellért are the grand baths, Rudas the Ottoman one, all booked online to skip the queue; the ruin bars of the Jewish Quarter run late, the Central Market Hall closes early, and the Danube cruises leave from the Pest embankment on the hour. Everything is walkable or a tram away, and 5G covers the whole city.
Lake Balaton, an hour and a half west by train, is the summer, with the northern shore's wine hills around Badacsony, Tihany's abbey, and the southern shore's beaches; Eger's baroque center and the Valley of the Beautiful Women's cellars, and Tokaj's sweet-wine region, are the east. The towns have 5G or strong 4G; the vineyards and the lake's back roads thin out.
Pécs in the south, with its early Christian tombs and Zsolnay porcelain, Szeged's paprika and its art nouveau center, and the Hortobágy puszta with its herdsmen and cranes are the further trips, each a train from Budapest with 5G in the city and 4G on the plain.
Vienna is two and a half hours from Budapest by train and Bratislava under three; Hungary touches seven countries, Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia, and every one of them is on the Europe plan, 49 countries on one plan that switches networks by itself at the border. A Hungary-only plan stops at the border, so for a central European loop the Europe plan is the better buy from the start. Read do I need a new plan for every country? for the detail.
The Sziget festival in August takes over an island in the Danube for a week and fills the city's hostels; the Formula 1 weekend at the Hungaroring the same month does the same for the hotels. The Christmas markets at Vörösmarty tér and the Basilica run from mid-November, and the Budapest Spring Festival is the other season to plan around.
Your plan connects to Yettel or One, with 5G in Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs, and Győr and 4G LTE across the towns and the lake. Your phone picks the network automatically once the plan is on; there is nothing to choose by hand.
In the Bükk and Mátra hills and on the vineyard roads, expect gaps on any network. Save what you need in town.
Most phones sold since 2019 support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later and most Android flagships from the same window. Check yours before you add a plan; it takes a few seconds. On iPhone, go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID or Available SIM. On Android, go to Settings, Network & Internet, SIMs and look for an option to add an eSIM. On Samsung, dial *#06# and look for an EID.
Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. If you're not sure, carrier-locked vs unlocked: how to tell shows you where to look.
Adding a Hungary plan doesn't touch your regular SIM. Calls and texts on your usual number keep working exactly as before. The new plan handles data while you're there, and most phones run both at once without you doing anything else. Bank codes and two-factor texts still arrive on your home number, as long as that line stays switched on.
For a European trip the real competition isn't another eSIM. It's your home carrier's roaming add-on, priced for a weekend and throttled by midweek; the SIM counter in arrivals, after the flight, with a queue; and café Wi-Fi, in a country where even the bus ticket is in an app. A Hungary plan added at home beats all three: one price agreed before you fly, live the second you land, and a Europe plan waiting if the trip grows.
