Yes. The LATAM plan covers Ecuador and 14 other countries, including Colombia and Peru, and your phone switches networks by itself at the border. Details in does a region plan cover every country in it?
In Ecuador your plan connects to Claro on 4G LTE, which handles maps, messaging, video calls, and streaming; 5G is not part of this plan. Your phone joins the network automatically once the plan is switched on. If it hasn't connected a minute after landing, work through the no-signal checklist.
In the three port towns, yes, on 4G. On the boats, the day trips, and the trails, no, on any network. Download what you need on the mainland and treat the week as mostly offline.
In Coca and Tena, yes. Down the river at the lodges, no, on any network. Confirm the pickup by message before you leave town and let people at home know you'll be out of contact.
It depends on how much data you want and how many days you're staying. A fixed plan costs less overall; an unlimited plan (5 GB a day at full speed, then slower) works out to a lower daily rate the longer you stay. Every current option and price is in the plan selector at the top of this page.
In the app: open My plans, choose your Ecuador plan, and tap Top up. The extra data lands on the same eSIM within a few seconds, with nothing new to add or scan. Full steps are in topping up data without reinstalling the eSIM.
Weeks ahead. The plan's days don't start until you turn it on and connect, so a plan bought a month before departure is still complete when you land. Plans need to be activated within 90 days of purchase. See what plan validity means and when it starts.
If it's eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked, yes, which covers most phones sold since 2019. The one-minute check for iPhone, Android, and Samsung is in is my phone eSIM compatible?

Ecuador eSIM for Quito, the Andes, the Amazon, and the Galápagos
Set it up before you fly. It's live the moment you land, nothing to check, nothing to remember.

Ecuador packs four worlds into one small country, the Andes, the Amazon, the coast, and the Galápagos, and the phone books the bus, the lodge, and the boat between them. The best eSIM for Ecuador is the one added at home, on Wi-Fi, so the ride in from Quito's airport and tomorrow's flight to Baltra are sorted before the altitude registers.
Below: how an Ecuador plan works, how to set it up before you fly, what to expect in Quito, Cuenca, the jungle, and the islands, and which plan fits when Colombia or Peru is on the same trip.
A South American trip is usually long, and it usually crosses a border or two. KnowRoaming is built for that. You add the KnowRoaming eSIM, called KR.One, to your phone once, then add a plan per trip: Ecuador now, a LATAM plan the year the route runs through three countries, anywhere else after that. The eSIM stays; only the plan changes.
The plan's days start when you turn it on and connect in Ecuador, not at checkout. Buy it weeks ahead, add it at home, and a delayed flight costs you nothing. The full rule is in what plan validity means and when it starts.
Choose a fixed plan for a set amount of data at the lowest overall price, or an unlimited plan when you'd rather not count. Unlimited plans give you 5 GB a day at full speed, then a slower speed until the allowance resets the next day. If a fixed plan runs low, top up in the app and the extra data lands on the same eSIM.
See it in two minutes: Meet KR.One, iPhone setup with KR.One, or Samsung setup with KR.One.
Do this at home on Wi-Fi. It takes about a minute.
Before you leave
- Get the KnowRoaming app (available on iOS and Android) and choose your Ecuador plan.
- Tap Add. First time on this phone? The app adds KR.One and your Ecuador plan together. Already have KR.One? Only the plan is added, with nothing to scan.
- Leave data roaming off on the KnowRoaming line until you land, and turn it off on your home line too so it doesn't run up charges in the background. Steps are in turning off roaming on your home line.
When you land
- Turn the plan on in the app, then turn data roaming on for the KnowRoaming line. That setting lives in your phone, so the app can't flip it for you.
- Give the phone a minute to find the network. If nothing happens, turn airplane mode on for 30 seconds and off again.
Prefer a QR code? The checkout page and your confirmation email both carry one; scan it from your phone's settings. Every tap, by device, is in adding your eSIM on iPhone, adding your eSIM on Android, and adding your eSIM on Samsung, or watch the iPhone QR walkthrough or the Samsung QR walkthrough. Still no signal after landing? Work through the no-signal checklist.
Quito's airport is about 45 minutes to an hour from the city, at lower altitude than the 2,850-meter capital, and the first day in town is slow; Guayaquil's is close to the center. Uber and Cabify run in both with the number you already have, and Quito's Metro and the trolleybuses cover the city.
Ecuador uses the US dollar, which simplifies everything; cards work in the cities and the bigger hotels, and cash covers the buses, the markets, and the villages. Small bills matter, since change for a twenty is hard to find outside the capital.
Quito's old town, the largest and best preserved in South America, is the first day: the plazas, La Compañía's gilded church, the Basílica's towers, and the TelefériQo cable car up Pichincha for the view. The Mitad del Mundo monument on the equator line is the half-day trip north, and both run on the phone for tickets and rides.
Cuenca, the colonial city in the south, is an hour's flight or a long, scenic bus; Baños, the adventure town under the Tungurahua volcano, is three hours from Quito; Cotopaxi's refuge and the Quilotoa crater loop are the day hikes. Otavalo's Saturday market is the other classic. The towns have 4G; the páramo, the crater rims, and the volcano trails drop out on every network.
The jungle lodges out of Coca and Tena are reached by canoe and are entirely offline once you leave the river town; the lodges confirm by message the day before, and the phone is a camera after that. The coast, from Montañita's surf to Puerto López's whale season from June to September, has 4G in the towns and thin coverage on the empty beaches.
Puerto López's whale-watching boats and the Isla de la Plata day trip run from June to September, and the coast road south to Salinas and north to Canoa is a bus-and-beach week; the towns have 4G and the boats have none.
Flights to Baltra or San Cristóbal leave from Quito and Guayaquil, with the transit card and the park fee paid on the way through. On the islands, 4G reaches Puerto Ayora, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, and Puerto Villamil, and stops at the town's edge; the cruise boats and the day-trip pangas are offline, and the boats' own Wi-Fi is slow and paid. Download everything on the mainland, and expect a week that is mostly disconnected.
Ecuador is on the LATAM plan, 15 countries on one plan that also covers Colombia and Peru, switching networks by itself at the Rumichaca or Huaquillas crossings; the overland route from Quito to Lima is covered end to end. An Ecuador-only plan stops at the border. Read do I need a new plan for every country? for the detail.
Your plan connects to Claro on 4G LTE. There is no 5G on this plan. Coverage is strong in Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca, and the Andean towns, and holds along the Pan-American highway and in the Galápagos ports. Your phone picks the network automatically once the plan is on; there is nothing to choose by hand.
In the Amazon, on the volcano trails, and on the Galápagos boats, expect no signal on any network. Save what you need in town.
Most phones sold since 2019 support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later and most Android flagships from the same window. Check yours before you add a plan; it takes a few seconds. On iPhone, go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID or Available SIM. On Android, go to Settings, Network & Internet, SIMs and look for an option to add an eSIM. On Samsung, dial *#06# and look for an EID.
Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. If you're not sure, carrier-locked vs unlocked: how to tell shows you where to look.
Adding an Ecuador plan doesn't touch your regular SIM. Calls and texts on your usual number keep working exactly as before. The new plan handles data while you're there, and most phones run both at once without you doing anything else. Bank codes and two-factor texts still arrive on your home number, as long as that line stays switched on.
For South America the alternatives are your home carrier's roaming rate, often unavailable outside the capital; a local SIM that means paperwork, a local number, and a queue; or hostel Wi-Fi that is fine until you're on a bus. An Ecuador plan added at home beats all three: one price agreed before you fly, live the second you land, and a LATAM plan if the route crosses borders.
