One app, total control.
Manage your plans, your data and your eSIM from your phone, wherever you land.
What travelers ask us most?
Yes. The LATAM plan covers Guatemala and 14 other countries, including Mexico, El Salvador, and Honduras, and your phone switches networks by itself at the border. It does not cover Belize, which has its own plan. Details in does a region plan cover every country in it?
In Guatemala your plan connects to Claro or Tigo, with 5G in Guatemala City and Antigua and 4G LTE elsewhere. Your phone joins the network automatically once the plan is switched on. If it hasn't connected a minute after landing, work through the no-signal checklist.
At the trailhead, yes; above it and at the base camp, not reliably, on any network. Download the route, agree the pickup with the agency, and let people at home know you'll be out overnight.
Up to the border at Melchor de Mencos, yes. Belize is not on the LATAM plan or the Guatemala plan; add a Belize plan to the same eSIM before you cross.
A fixed plan costs less overall; an unlimited plan (a daily high-speed allowance, then slower) works out to a lower daily rate the longer you stay. The price depends on how much data you want and how many days you're staying; every current option and price is in the plan selector at the top of this page.
In the app: open My plans, choose your Guatemala plan, and tap Top up. The extra data lands on the same eSIM within a few seconds, with nothing new to add or scan. Full steps are in topping up data without reinstalling the eSIM.
Weeks ahead. The plan's days don't start until you turn it on and connect, so a plan bought a month before departure is still complete when you land. Plans need to be activated within 90 days of purchase. See what plan validity means and when it starts.
No, on any network. On the volcano trails, inside Tikal, at Semuc Champey, and on the lake, expect no signal on any network.
Guatemala eSIM for Antigua, Lake Atitlán, and Tikal
Set it up before you fly. It's live the moment you land, nothing to check, nothing to remember.

Guatemala is shuttle vans booked by message, a lake crossed by boats with no timetable, and a jungle city reached by a dawn flight, and the arrivals hall at La Aurora is the place to have a phone that already works. The best eSIM for Guatemala is the one added at home, on Wi-Fi, so the shuttle to Antigua and the first volcano hike are confirmed before you find the exit.
Below: how a Guatemala plan works, how to set it up before you fly, what to expect in Antigua, at Atitlán, and in the Petén, and which plan fits when Mexico, Belize, or Honduras is on the same trip.
A Central American trip rarely stays in one country; the buses and the border posts are part of it. KnowRoaming is built for that. You add the KnowRoaming eSIM, called KR.One, to your phone once, then add a plan per trip: Guatemala now, a LATAM plan the year the route runs down the isthmus, anywhere else after that. The eSIM stays; only the plan changes, and nothing needs deleting when you get home.
The plan's days start when you turn it on and connect in Guatemala, not at checkout. Buy it weeks ahead, add it at home, and a delayed flight costs you nothing. The full rule is in what plan validity means and when it starts.
Choose a fixed plan for a set amount of data at the lowest overall price, or an unlimited plan when you'd rather not count. Unlimited plans give you a daily high-speed allowance, then a slower speed until the allowance resets the next day. If a fixed plan runs low, top up in the app and the extra data lands on the same eSIM. Hotspot works on every plan, fixed or unlimited; a laptop or a travel partner's phone shares the same eSIM data.
See it in two minutes: Meet KR.One, iPhone setup with KR.One, or Samsung setup with KR.One.
Do this at home on Wi-Fi. It takes about a minute.
Before you leave
- Get the KnowRoaming app (available on iOS and Android) and choose your Guatemala plan.
- Tap Add. First time on this phone? The app adds KR.One and your Guatemala plan together. Already have KR.One? Only the plan is added, with nothing to scan.
- Leave data roaming off on the KnowRoaming line until you land, and turn it off on your home line too so it doesn't run up charges in the background. Steps are in turning off roaming on your home line.
When you land
- Turn the plan on in the app, then turn data roaming on for the KnowRoaming line. That setting lives in your phone, so the app can't flip it for you.
- Give the phone a minute to find the network. If nothing happens, turn airplane mode on for 30 seconds and off again.
Prefer a QR code? The checkout page and your confirmation email both carry one; scan it from your phone's settings. Every tap is in how to add your plan, start to finish, or watch the iPhone QR walkthrough or the Samsung QR walkthrough. Still no signal after landing? Work through the no-signal checklist.
La Aurora is inside Guatemala City, and most visitors head straight to Antigua, an hour away by pre-booked shuttle or Uber, which works with the number you already have. The quetzal is the currency, cards work in Antigua, the capital, and the lake's bigger towns, and cash covers the chicken buses, the markets, and the villages; ATMs run out around holidays.
The shuttle vans between the tourist towns, Antigua to Panajachel to Lanquín to Flores, are booked the day before by message and leave early; the chicken buses go everywhere else for a few quetzales.
Guatemala City's Zona 1, the Zona 10 hotels, and the Zona 4 cafés are worth a day if a flight forces one; the Popol Vuh and Ixchel museums are the reason. The city runs on Uber and the Transmetro, and 5G covers all of it.
Antigua's cobbled streets, the ruined convents, and the arch with Agua volcano behind it are the postcard; the Acatenango overnight hike, watching Fuego erupt across the valley, is the reason many people come, booked with the agencies on the phone and entirely offline above the base camp. Pacaya is the easier half-day. Claro's and Tigo's 5G cover the town; the volcanoes have signal at the trailheads and little above.
Panajachel is the lake's gateway, and the lanchas that cross to San Pedro, San Marcos, and Santiago leave when they fill, not on a schedule; the villages have 4G, the water doesn't. Chichicastenango's Thursday and Sunday market and Quetzaltenango's highland towns are the other stops, with the mountain roads dropping out between them.
Quetzaltenango, Xela to everyone who lives there, is the highland city for Spanish schools and the base for the Santa María volcano and the Fuentes Georginas hot springs; a month there on an unlimited plan, with a daily high-speed allowance, covers the video lessons and the calls home.
Tikal's temples above the jungle canopy are a dawn flight to Flores and an hour's drive, with the park entry paid ahead and no signal inside; Semuc Champey's turquoise pools near Lanquín are a long day of shuttle and 4x4 from anywhere, with 4G in Lanquín and nothing at the pools. Download tickets, maps, and the guesthouse numbers before you leave Antigua.
Guatemala is on the LATAM plan, 15 countries on one plan that also covers Mexico, El Salvador, and Honduras; the routes to San Cristóbal de las Casas, to El Tunco, and to Copán are covered end to end, with the phone switching networks by itself at the border. Belize, the usual onward hop from Flores, is not on the LATAM plan and has its own KnowRoaming plan, added to the same eSIM. A Guatemala-only plan stops at every border. Read crossing into a border country your plan doesn't include before a route that leaves the plan's coverage.
Your plan connects to Claro or Tigo, with 5G in Guatemala City and Antigua and 4G LTE in the lake towns, Quetzaltenango, Flores, and along the main roads. Your phone picks the network automatically once the plan is on; there is nothing to choose by hand.
On the volcano trails, inside Tikal, at Semuc Champey, and on the lake, expect no signal on any network. Save what you need in town.
Most current iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, and Google Pixel phones support eSIM. Check yours before you add a plan; it takes a few seconds. On iPhone, go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID or Available SIM. On Android, go to Settings, Network & Internet, SIMs and look for an option to add an eSIM. On Samsung, dial *#06# and look for an EID.
Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. If you're not sure, the same check shows you where to look.
Keep your home number too
Adding a Guatemala plan doesn't touch your regular SIM. Calls and texts on your usual number keep working exactly as before. The new plan handles data while you're there, and most phones run both at once without you doing anything else. Bank codes and two-factor texts still arrive on your home number, as long as that line stays switched on.
One plan. No roaming surprises. Live the moment you land.
In Central America the alternatives are your home carrier's roaming rate, often unavailable outside the capital; a local SIM at each border with a new number each time; or hostel Wi-Fi that is fine until you're on a bus. A Guatemala plan added at home beats all three: one price agreed before you fly, live the second you land, and a LATAM plan if the route crosses borders.
