Yes. The Asia plan covers Mongolia and 27 other countries, including China, and your phone switches networks by itself at the border. Details in does a region plan cover every country in it?
In Mongolia your plan connects to Mobicom on 4G LTE, which handles maps, messaging, video calls, and streaming in the towns; 5G is not part of this plan. Your phone joins the network automatically once the plan is switched on. If it hasn't connected a minute after landing, work through the no-signal checklist.
In the provincial towns, yes. On the steppe, in the dunes, and at the ger camps, no, on any network, for most of the tour. Confirm everything in Ulaanbaatar, download maps, and let people at home know the return date.
No. Once a plan is switched on, its days keep counting whether or not there is signal. For a two-week tour with a few days in the capital at each end, a fixed plan sized for the city days is the better buy; see what plan validity means and when it starts.
It depends on how much data you want and how many days you're staying. A fixed plan costs less overall; an unlimited plan (5 GB a day at full speed, then slower) works out to a lower daily rate the longer you stay. Every current option and price is in the plan selector at the top of this page.
In the app: open My plans, choose your Mongolia plan, and tap Top up. The extra data lands on the same eSIM within a few seconds, with nothing new to add or scan. Full steps are in topping up data without reinstalling the eSIM.
Weeks ahead. The plan's days don't start until you turn it on and connect, so a plan bought a month before departure is still complete when you land. Plans need to be activated within 90 days of purchase. See what plan validity means and when it starts.
If it's eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked, yes, which covers most phones sold since 2019. The one-minute check for iPhone, Android, and Samsung is in is my phone eSIM compatible?

Mongolia eSIM for Ulaanbaatar, the Gobi, Khövsgöl, and the ger camps
Set it up before you fly. It's live the moment you land, nothing to check, nothing to remember.

Mongolia is a capital where the phone does everything and a countryside where it does nothing, and the new airport an hour outside Ulaanbaatar is where the difference starts. The best eSIM for Mongolia is the one added at home, on Wi-Fi, so the ride into the city and the tour operator's pickup are confirmed before the long drive in, and the two weeks of offline steppe are planned from a hotel with data.
Below: how a Mongolia plan works, how to set it up before you fly, what to expect in Ulaanbaatar and on the tours, and which plan fits when China is on the same trip.
Asian trips tend to be multi-stop, and most travel eSIMs want a fresh profile at every airport. KnowRoaming doesn't. You add the KnowRoaming eSIM, called KR.One, to your phone once, then add a plan per trip: one country for a single-city break, the Asia plan when the route runs through several, and next year's trip on the same eSIM. Nothing to scan again, nothing to delete when you get home.
The plan's days start when you turn it on and connect in Mongolia, not at checkout. Buy it weeks ahead, add it at home, and a delayed flight costs you nothing. The full rule is in what plan validity means and when it starts.
Choose a fixed plan for a set amount of data at the lowest overall price, or an unlimited plan when you'd rather not count. Unlimited plans give you 5 GB a day at full speed, then a slower speed until the allowance resets the next day. If a fixed plan runs low, top up in the app and the extra data lands on the same eSIM.
See it in two minutes: Meet KR.One, iPhone setup with KR.One, or Samsung setup with KR.One.
Do this at home on Wi-Fi. It takes about a minute.
Before you leave
- Get the KnowRoaming app (available on iOS and Android) and choose your Mongolia plan.
- Tap Add. First time on this phone? The app adds KR.One and your Mongolia plan together. Already have KR.One? Only the plan is added, with nothing to scan.
- Leave data roaming off on the KnowRoaming line until you land, and turn it off on your home line too so it doesn't run up charges in the background. Steps are in turning off roaming on your home line.
When you land
- Turn the plan on in the app, then turn data roaming on for the KnowRoaming line. That setting lives in your phone, so the app can't flip it for you.
- Give the phone a minute to find the network. If nothing happens, turn airplane mode on for 30 seconds and off again.
Prefer a QR code? The checkout page and your confirmation email both carry one; scan it from your phone's settings. Every tap, by device, is in adding your eSIM on iPhone, adding your eSIM on Android, and adding your eSIM on Samsung, or watch the iPhone QR walkthrough or the Samsung QR walkthrough. Still no signal after landing? Work through the no-signal checklist.
The new Chinggis Khaan International is about 50 km from Ulaanbaatar, an hour or more by the airport bus or a taxi arranged through the hotel or the UBCab app; many passports enter visa-free for short stays. The tugrik is the currency, cards work in the capital's hotels, restaurants, and supermarkets, and cash covers everything outside it.
Ulaanbaatar's Gandan monastery, the Sükhbaatar square, the Chinggis Khaan museum, and the Zaisan hill are the city days; the traffic is the city's defining fact, and a ride booked in the app while you finish lunch beats one hailed on the road.
Terelj national park, an hour and a half from the city, is the day trip and the first night in a ger for most visitors, with the Turtle Rock, the Aryabal monastery, and horse rides from the camps; Mobicom's 4G reaches the park's main valley and fades in the side valleys.
The Gobi's dunes at Khongoryn Els, the Flaming Cliffs, and the ice canyon at Yolyn Am; Khövsgöl lake in the north; Kharkhorin and the Orkhon valley in the center: each is a tour of a week or more by 4x4 with a driver and a cook, staying in ger camps, and none of it has mobile signal beyond the provincial towns, on any network. The operators run on satellite devices and confirm everything in the capital before departure. Download maps, save the itinerary, and let people at home know the return date.
Naadam, the three games of wrestling, archery, and horse racing, fills Ulaanbaatar from 11 to 13 July with tickets sold online and hotels booked months out; the Golden Eagle Festival in Bayan-Ölgii in early October and the ice festival on Khövsgöl in March are the other events worth timing a trip for. Winter is among the coldest on earth, and a phone outside a pocket dies in minutes.
Mongolia is on the Asia plan, 28 countries on one plan that also covers China, with the train south to Beijing switching networks by itself at Zamyn-Üüd and the mainland's internet rules starting there; a VPN set up before you fly is the practical answer. Mongolia is also on the Global plan. A Mongolia-only plan stops at the border. Read crossing into a border country your plan doesn't include before a route that leaves the plan's coverage.
The mining sector, the NGOs, and the embassies keep a steady flow of long-stay visitors in the capital, and Mobicom's 4G handles video calls from any apartment; the power is reliable in the city and the winter air is the bigger problem. For a posting of weeks, an unlimited plan, with 5 GB a day at full speed, covers the calls and the hotspot; a fixed plan suits a tour's bookend days in the city.
Your plan connects to Mobicom on 4G LTE. There is no 5G on this plan. Coverage is strong in Ulaanbaatar, Darkhan, and Erdenet and reaches the provincial capitals and the main paved roads. Your phone picks the network automatically once the plan is on; there is nothing to choose by hand.
Beyond the towns, across the steppe, the Gobi, and the lake country, expect no signal on any network for days at a time. Plan the tours as offline.
Most phones sold since 2019 support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later and most Android flagships from the same window. Check yours before you add a plan; it takes a few seconds. On iPhone, go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID or Available SIM. On Android, go to Settings, Network & Internet, SIMs and look for an option to add an eSIM. On Samsung, dial *#06# and look for an EID.
Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. If you're not sure, carrier-locked vs unlocked: how to tell shows you where to look.
Adding a Mongolia plan doesn't touch your regular SIM. Calls and texts on your usual number keep working exactly as before. The new plan handles data while you're there, and most phones run both at once without you doing anything else. Bank codes and two-factor texts still arrive on your home number, as long as that line stays switched on.
For Asia the alternatives are a home-carrier roaming pass that resets at every border, an airport SIM counter at each arrival, or hotel Wi-Fi that stops at the lobby. A Mongolia plan added at home beats all three: one price agreed before you fly, live the second you land, and one plan across every stop on the route.
