No. The islands are a separate KnowRoaming destination, on the Caribbean plan and the Global plan but not covered by a USA plan or the North America plan. Add a US Virgin Islands plan or the Caribbean plan to the same eSIM. Details in does a region plan cover every country in it?
In the US Virgin Islands your plan connects to T-Mobile, with 5G in the towns and 4G LTE across the three islands. Your phone joins the network automatically once the plan is switched on. If it hasn't connected a minute after landing, work through the no-signal checklist.
On the Caribbean plan, yes at both ends, switching by itself at the dock; a US Virgin Islands plan stops as you leave US waters, and the BVI are not on the Global plan.
Yes. The plan starts counting when you switch it on and connect as you come ashore in Charlotte Amalie, so a one-day plan covers a port day. It won't work at sea; turn it off again when you sail.
It depends on how much data you want and how many days you're staying. A fixed plan costs less overall; an unlimited plan (5 GB a day at full speed, then slower) works out to a lower daily rate the longer you stay. Every current option and price is in the plan selector at the top of this page.
In the app: open My plans, choose your US Virgin Islands plan, and tap Top up. The extra data lands on the same eSIM within a few seconds, with nothing new to add or scan. Full steps are in topping up data without reinstalling the eSIM.
Weeks ahead. The plan's days don't start until you turn it on and connect, so a plan bought a month before departure is still complete when you land. Plans need to be activated within 90 days of purchase. See what plan validity means and when it starts.
Yes, on every plan, fixed or unlimited. Tethering a laptop or a travel partner's phone counts against your plan's data the same way as use on your own phone. See tethering your laptop to a KnowRoaming eSIM.

The US Virgin Islands are America's Caribbean, a cruise port, a national park that is most of an island, and a ferry to the British side, and the one fact that catches most arrivals is that a USA plan doesn't cover them. The best eSIM for the US Virgin Islands is a US Virgin Islands plan, added at home, on Wi-Fi, so the taxi from Cyril E. King and the St. John ferry are sorted before the customs line moves.
Below: how a US Virgin Islands plan works, how to set it up before you fly, why the USA plan stops at the mainland, and what to expect on the three islands and the water between.
Island trips rarely stay on one island, and most travel eSIMs make you start over at every stop. KnowRoaming doesn't. You add the KnowRoaming eSIM, called KR.One, to your phone once, then add a plan per trip: the US Virgin Islands this time, the whole Caribbean plan when you're hopping between islands, somewhere else entirely next winter. Nothing to scan again, nothing to delete when you get home.
The plan's days start when you turn it on and connect in the US Virgin Islands, not at checkout. Buy it weeks ahead, add it at home, and a delayed flight costs you nothing. The full rule is in what plan validity means and when it starts.
Choose a fixed plan for a set amount of data at the lowest overall price, or an unlimited plan when you'd rather not count. Unlimited plans give you 5 GB a day at full speed, then a slower speed until the allowance resets the next day. If a fixed plan runs low, top up in the app and the extra data lands on the same eSIM.
See it in two minutes: Meet KR.One, iPhone setup with KR.One, or Samsung setup with KR.One.
Do this at home on Wi-Fi. It takes about a minute.
Before you leave
- Get the KnowRoaming app (available on iOS and Android) and choose your US Virgin Islands plan.
- Tap Add. First time on this phone? The app adds KR.One and your US Virgin Islands plan together. Already have KR.One? Only the plan is added, with nothing to scan.
- Leave data roaming off on the KnowRoaming line until you land, and turn it off on your home line too so it doesn't run up charges in the background. Steps are in turning off roaming on your home line.
When you land
- Turn the plan on in the app, then turn data roaming on for the KnowRoaming line. That setting lives in your phone, so the app can't flip it for you.
- Give the phone a minute to find the network. If nothing happens, turn airplane mode on for 30 seconds and off again.
Prefer a QR code? The checkout page and your confirmation email both carry one; scan it from your phone's settings. Every tap, by device, is in adding your eSIM on iPhone, adding your eSIM on Android, and adding your eSIM on Samsung, or watch the iPhone QR walkthrough or the Samsung QR walkthrough. Still no signal after landing? Work through the no-signal checklist.
Cyril E. King airport on St. Thomas is about 15 minutes from Charlotte Amalie and the Red Hook ferry to St. John, with the safari taxis on fixed rates; St. Croix's airport takes its own flights. No passport is needed for US citizens, and US entry rules apply for everyone else. The US dollar is the currency, and cards work everywhere; cash covers the taxis and the beach bars. Traffic drives on the left in American cars.
The US Virgin Islands are a separate KnowRoaming destination: a USA plan and the North America plan do not include them, and the Caribbean plan, 25 islands and destinations, does, along with the Global plan, which lists the islands in their own right. A US Virgin Islands plan works for the three islands alone. Add whichever you choose before you fly. Read do I need a new plan for every country? for the detail.
Charlotte Amalie's shops and Magens Bay are St. Thomas; the Virgin Islands National Park, two-thirds of St. John, with Trunk Bay's snorkel trail and the Reef Bay hike, is the island most people cross for; St. Croix's Christiansted, its rum, and the Buck Island reef are the further island by seaplane or flight. T-Mobile's 5G covers the towns and 4G the coasts; the park's trails drop out.
The ferries from Red Hook and Charlotte Amalie cross to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands in an hour, with a customs check at each end; the BVI are on the Caribbean plan but not on a US Virgin Islands plan or the Global plan, so the Caribbean plan is the neat answer for a two-territory trip. Mid-channel the signal fades on any network.
Charlotte Amalie's piers take several ships a day in winter, and a port day works on a one-day plan that starts counting as you come ashore; December to April is the busy season, and June to November is hurricane season, when the airlines and the ferries post changes first. Carnival on St. Thomas in April is the calendar's fixture.
Your plan connects to T-Mobile, with 5G in Charlotte Amalie, Red Hook, Cruz Bay, and Christiansted and 4G LTE across the three islands' coasts. Your phone picks the network automatically once the plan is on; there is nothing to choose by hand.
On St. John's park trails, at Buck Island, and on the ferries mid-channel, expect gaps on any network. Save what you need in town.
Most phones sold since 2019 support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later and most Android flagships from the same window. Check yours before you add a plan; it takes a few seconds. On iPhone, go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID or Available SIM. On Android, go to Settings, Network & Internet, SIMs and look for an option to add an eSIM. On Samsung, dial *#06# and look for an EID.
Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. If you're not sure, carrier-locked vs unlocked: how to tell shows you where to look.
Adding a US Virgin Islands plan doesn't touch your regular SIM. Calls and texts on your usual number keep working exactly as before. The new plan handles data while you're there, and most phones run both at once without you doing anything else. Bank codes and two-factor texts still arrive on your home number, as long as that line stays switched on.
On an island the alternatives are thin: a home-carrier roaming pass that treats every island as a new country, a local SIM from a shop that closes early, or resort Wi-Fi that stops at the pool. A US Virgin Islands plan added at home beats all three: one price agreed before you fly, live the second you land, and a Caribbean plan if the trip takes in more than one island.
