여행객들은 가장 많이 묻는 질문은 무엇인가요?
Both, and the Global plan. For Almaty to Bishkek and Tashkent, choose the Asia plan; for a route through the Caucasus and Turkey, the Europe plan. Details in does a region plan cover every country in it?
In Kazakhstan your plan connects to Kcell, Beeline, or Tele2/Altel, with 5G in Almaty, Astana, and Shymkent and 4G LTE elsewhere. Your phone joins the network automatically once the plan is switched on. If it hasn't connected a minute after landing, work through the no-signal checklist.
On the road and at the villages, yes, on 4G. At the canyon rim and the upper lakes, not reliably, on any network. Download the route and agree the pickup before you leave Almaty.
Yes, over the plan's data, with the phone number you already have. A Kazakhstan plan is data only; calls home go over WhatsApp or another app, and your home number keeps working on your home SIM for texts and bank codes.
It depends on how much data you want and how many days you're staying. A fixed plan costs less overall; an unlimited plan (5 GB a day at full speed, then slower) works out to a lower daily rate the longer you stay. Every current option and price is in the plan selector at the top of this page.
In the app: open My plans, choose your Kazakhstan plan, and tap Top up. The extra data lands on the same eSIM within a few seconds, with nothing new to add or scan. Full steps are in topping up data without reinstalling the eSIM.
Weeks ahead. The plan's days don't start until you turn it on and connect, so a plan bought a month before departure is still complete when you land. Plans need to be activated within 90 days of purchase. See what plan validity means and when it starts.
If it's eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked, yes, which covers most phones sold since 2019. The one-minute check for iPhone, Android, and Samsung is in is my phone eSIM compatible?

Kazakhstan eSIM for Almaty, Astana, the canyons, and the steppe
Set it up before you fly. It's live the moment you land, nothing to check, nothing to remember.
Already with us? Get the app on the App Store or Google Play.
Kazakhstan is the ninth-largest country in the world, a ride app in every city, and a QR payment system that needs a local account, and the arrivals hall at Almaty at four in the morning is the place to have a phone that already works. The best eSIM for Kazakhstan is the one added at home, on Wi-Fi, so the Yandex Go into the city is booked before the bags arrive.
Below: how a Kazakhstan plan works, how to set it up before you fly, what to expect in Almaty, Astana, and the mountains and canyons, and why a Central Asian loop can run on the Asia plan or the Europe plan.
Asian trips tend to be multi-stop, and most travel eSIMs want a fresh profile at every airport. KnowRoaming doesn't. You add the KnowRoaming eSIM, called KR.One, to your phone once, then add a plan per trip: one country for a single-city break, the Asia plan when the route runs through several, and next year's trip on the same eSIM. Nothing to scan again, nothing to delete when you get home.
The plan's days start when you turn it on and connect in Kazakhstan, not at checkout. Buy it weeks ahead, add it at home, and a delayed flight costs you nothing. The full rule is in what plan validity means and when it starts.
Choose a fixed plan for a set amount of data at the lowest overall price, or an unlimited plan when you'd rather not count. Unlimited plans give you 5 GB a day at full speed, then a slower speed until the allowance resets the next day. If a fixed plan runs low, top up in the app and the extra data lands on the same eSIM.
See it in two minutes: Meet KR.One, iPhone setup with KR.One, or Samsung setup with KR.One.
Do this at home on Wi-Fi. It takes about a minute.
Before you leave
- Get the KnowRoaming app (available on iOS and Android) and choose your Kazakhstan plan.
- Tap Add. First time on this phone? The app adds KR.One and your Kazakhstan plan together. Already have KR.One? Only the plan is added, with nothing to scan.
- Leave data roaming off on the KnowRoaming line until you land, and turn it off on your home line too so it doesn't run up charges in the background. Steps are in turning off roaming on your home line.
When you land
- Turn the plan on in the app, then turn data roaming on for the KnowRoaming line. That setting lives in your phone, so the app can't flip it for you.
- Give the phone a minute to find the network. If nothing happens, turn airplane mode on for 30 seconds and off again.
Prefer a QR code? The checkout page and your confirmation email both carry one; scan it from your phone's settings. Every tap, by device, is in adding your eSIM on iPhone, adding your eSIM on Android, and adding your eSIM on Samsung, or watch the iPhone QR walkthrough or the Samsung QR walkthrough. Still no signal after landing? Work through the no-signal checklist.
Almaty's airport is about half an hour from the center and Astana's about the same, with Yandex Go working from both with the number you already have and the airport buses the cheap alternative. Many passports enter visa-free for short stays; check the current rule. The tenge is the currency, cards work in the cities, and cash covers the bazaars and the villages.
Kaspi, the QR payment app that Kazakhstan runs on, needs a local account, so visitors pay by card and carry cash. Almaty's Panfilov park, the Green Bazaar, and the Kok-Tobe cable car are the first day; Astana's Bayterek tower and the Khan Shatyr are the capital's set pieces.
Big Almaty Lake, the Shymbulak ski resort by cable car from the city, the Charyn canyon three hours east, and the Kolsai and Kaindy lakes beyond it are the trips everyone takes, by tour or a hired car with a driver. The resort and the lake road have 4G; the canyon rim and the high lakes drop out, on any network, so download the route and agree the pickup before you leave the city.
Turkestan's mausoleum, Shymkent, and the southern silk-road towns are an overnight train or a flight from Almaty; Baikonur needs a permit arranged months ahead; the west and the Caspian are another flight again. The trains, booked on the national railway's app, have 4G near the towns and nothing across the open steppe. Distances are the country's defining fact, and the domestic airlines' apps are where the delays show up first.
Almaty is a city worth days on its own: the Arbat's cafés, the Kok-Tobe hill, the Medeu skating rink in winter, and a food scene that runs from Uyghur laghman to Korean kimchi from the Green Bazaar. Astana's futuristic center is a contrast worth the two-hour flight, with the Nur-Alem sphere and the mosque among the largest in Central Asia.
Kazakhstan sits on both the Asia plan, 28 countries including Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan, and the Europe plan, 49 countries including Georgia and Turkey, as well as the Global plan. For the classic Central Asian loop from Almaty to Bishkek and Tashkent, the Asia plan is the one to choose; the phone switches networks by itself at the Korday crossing. China, across the eastern border, is on the Asia plan with its own internet rules. Read do I need a new plan for every country? for the detail.
Winter is long and cold, with Shymbulak's season from December to April and Astana among the coldest capitals on earth; Nauryz, the spring new year on 21 March, fills the squares with yurts and horse games. Summer is the season for the canyons and the lakes, and the busiest for the Almaty trails. Keep the phone warm in winter; the cold drains it faster than the data does.
Your plan connects to Kcell, Beeline, or Tele2/Altel, with 5G in Almaty, Astana, and Shymkent and 4G LTE in the regional towns and along the main roads and rail lines. Your phone picks the network automatically once the plan is on; there is nothing to choose by hand.
Across the steppe between towns, in the canyons, and at the high lakes, expect long stretches with no signal on any network. Save what you need in the cities.
Most phones sold since 2019 support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later and most Android flagships from the same window. Check yours before you add a plan; it takes a few seconds. On iPhone, go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID or Available SIM. On Android, go to Settings, Network & Internet, SIMs and look for an option to add an eSIM. On Samsung, dial *#06# and look for an EID.
Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. If you're not sure, carrier-locked vs unlocked: how to tell shows you where to look.
Adding a Kazakhstan plan doesn't touch your regular SIM. Calls and texts on your usual number keep working exactly as before. The new plan handles data while you're there, and most phones run both at once without you doing anything else. Bank codes and two-factor texts still arrive on your home number, as long as that line stays switched on.
For Asia the alternatives are a home-carrier roaming pass that resets at every border, an airport SIM counter at each arrival, or hotel Wi-Fi that stops at the lobby. A Kazakhstan plan added at home beats all three: one price agreed before you fly, live the second you land, and one plan across every stop on the route.
