여행객들은 가장 많이 묻는 질문은 무엇인가요?
Yes. The Asia plan covers Taiwan and 27 other countries, including Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Thailand, and your phone switches networks by itself when you land. Details in does a region plan cover every country in it?
In Taiwan your plan connects to Taiwan Mobile, with 5G in the cities and along the high-speed rail and 4G LTE elsewhere. Your phone joins the network automatically once the plan is switched on. If it hasn't connected a minute after landing, work through the no-signal checklist.
At the visitor center and the main road, mostly; in the tunnels and on the trails, not reliably, on any network. Download the route and check the trail closures before you set off.
Yes; the physical card is sold at the airport and every convenience store, and the phone-wallet version loads on some devices over the plan's data. It pays for the metro, buses, bikes, and shops nationwide.
It depends on how much data you want and how many days you're staying. A fixed plan costs less overall; an unlimited plan (5 GB a day at full speed, then slower) works out to a lower daily rate the longer you stay. Every current option and price is in the plan selector at the top of this page.
In the app: open My plans, choose your Taiwan plan, and tap Top up. The extra data lands on the same eSIM within a few seconds, with nothing new to add or scan. Full steps are in topping up data without reinstalling the eSIM.
Weeks ahead. The plan's days don't start until you turn it on and connect, so a plan bought a month before departure is still complete when you land. Plans need to be activated within 90 days of purchase. See what plan validity means and when it starts.
If it's eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked, yes, which covers most phones sold since 2019. The one-minute check for iPhone, Android, and Samsung is in is my phone eSIM compatible?

Taiwan eSIM for Taipei, the high-speed rail, and Taroko
Set it up before you fly. It's live the moment you land, nothing to check, nothing to remember.
Already with us? Get the app on the App Store or Google Play.
Taiwan is an EasyCard that pays for the metro and the 7-Eleven, a high-speed train that crosses the island in about an hour and a half, and a night market that runs on cash and a translation app, and Taoyuan's arrivals hall is the place to have a phone that already works. The best eSIM for Taiwan is the one added at home, on Wi-Fi, so the airport MRT is tapped through and the Din Tai Fung queue is joined online before the bags come round.
Below: how a Taiwan plan works, how to set it up before you fly, what to expect in Taipei, on the rails, and on the east coast and the islands, and which plan fits when Japan or Hong Kong is on the same trip.
Asian trips tend to be multi-stop, and most travel eSIMs want a fresh profile at every airport. KnowRoaming doesn't. You add the KnowRoaming eSIM, called KR.One, to your phone once, then add a plan per trip: one country for a single-city break, the Asia plan when the route runs through several, and next year's trip on the same eSIM. Nothing to scan again, nothing to delete when you get home.
The plan's days start when you turn it on and connect in Taiwan, not at checkout. Buy it weeks ahead, add it at home, and a delayed flight costs you nothing. The full rule is in what plan validity means and when it starts.
Choose a fixed plan for a set amount of data at the lowest overall price, or an unlimited plan when you'd rather not count. Unlimited plans give you 5 GB a day at full speed, then a slower speed until the allowance resets the next day. If a fixed plan runs low, top up in the app and the extra data lands on the same eSIM.
See it in two minutes: Meet KR.One, iPhone setup with KR.One, or Samsung setup with KR.One.
Do this at home on Wi-Fi. It takes about a minute.
Before you leave
- Get the KnowRoaming app (available on iOS and Android) and choose your Taiwan plan.
- Tap Add. First time on this phone? The app adds KR.One and your Taiwan plan together. Already have KR.One? Only the plan is added, with nothing to scan.
- Leave data roaming off on the KnowRoaming line until you land, and turn it off on your home line too so it doesn't run up charges in the background. Steps are in turning off roaming on your home line.
When you land
- Turn the plan on in the app, then turn data roaming on for the KnowRoaming line. That setting lives in your phone, so the app can't flip it for you.
- Give the phone a minute to find the network. If nothing happens, turn airplane mode on for 30 seconds and off again.
Prefer a QR code? The checkout page and your confirmation email both carry one; scan it from your phone's settings. Every tap, by device, is in adding your eSIM on iPhone, adding your eSIM on Android, and adding your eSIM on Samsung, or watch the iPhone QR walkthrough or the Samsung QR walkthrough. Still no signal after landing? Work through the no-signal checklist.
Taoyuan's airport MRT reaches Taipei Main Station in about half an hour, and the EasyCard, bought at the station or loaded into a phone wallet on some devices, runs the metro, the buses, the YouBike rentals, and the convenience stores nationwide; Uber runs in the cities. Most passports enter visa-free and complete the arrival card online. The New Taiwan dollar is the currency, cards work in the malls, hotels, and chain restaurants, and cash covers the night markets, the temples, and the small eateries.
Taipei 101, the Chiang Kai-shek memorial, the Shilin and Raohe night markets, and the hot springs at Beitou are the first days; Jiufen's lantern-lit lanes and the Yehliu geopark are the classic day out.
The HSR reaches Taichung in an hour and Kaohsiung in about an hour and a half, with seats booked in the T Express app and the stations sitting outside most city centers; Tainan's temples and street food, Kaohsiung's Pier-2 and the Lotus Pond, and Sun Moon Lake by bus from Taichung are the west. Taiwan Mobile's 5G covers the whole corridor and the cities.
Hualien and the Taroko gorge, the east coast's cliffs by train and scooter, Taitung's hot springs, and the islands of Green Island and Lanyu by boat or small plane are the wilder Taiwan; the gorge's trails and tunnels, the coast road's cliffs, and the islands' far sides thin out on every network. Kenting's beaches at the southern tip are the surf and the summer.
Taiwan is on the Asia plan, 28 countries on one plan that also covers Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asia, switching networks by itself when you land; a Taipei stopover between Tokyo and Bangkok fits it without any change in the app. Taiwan is also on the Global plan. Mainland China, across the strait, is on the Asia plan with its own internet rules. A Taiwan-only plan stops at the coast. Read do I need a new plan for every country? for the detail.
The typhoon season runs from July to October, when the HSR and the flights post changes to their apps first, and the east coast's trains stop for the worst of it; the Lunar New Year and the lantern festival two weeks later fill the trains, and the Mid-Autumn Festival is the barbecue night. Taipei is a long-stay city for the tech sector and for language students, with 5G everywhere; for a stay of weeks, an unlimited plan, with 5 GB a day at full speed, covers calls and the hotspot.
Your plan connects to Taiwan Mobile, with 5G in Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and along the HSR corridor and 4G LTE across the towns, the east coast, and the islands. Your phone picks the network automatically once the plan is on; there is nothing to choose by hand.
In Taroko's tunnels and trails, the central mountains, and on the outer islands' far sides, expect gaps on any network. Save what you need in town.
Most phones sold since 2019 support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later and most Android flagships from the same window. Check yours before you add a plan; it takes a few seconds. On iPhone, go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID or Available SIM. On Android, go to Settings, Network & Internet, SIMs and look for an option to add an eSIM. On Samsung, dial *#06# and look for an EID.
Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. If you're not sure, carrier-locked vs unlocked: how to tell shows you where to look.
Adding a Taiwan plan doesn't touch your regular SIM. Calls and texts on your usual number keep working exactly as before. The new plan handles data while you're there, and most phones run both at once without you doing anything else. Bank codes and two-factor texts still arrive on your home number, as long as that line stays switched on.
For Asia the alternatives are a home-carrier roaming pass that resets at every border, an airport SIM counter at each arrival, or hotel Wi-Fi that stops at the lobby. A Taiwan plan added at home beats all three: one price agreed before you fly, live the second you land, and one plan across every stop on the route.
