여행객들은 가장 많이 묻는 질문은 무엇인가요?
It depends on how much data you want and how many days you're staying. A fixed plan costs less overall and covers messaging, WhatsApp calls, and maps comfortably; an unlimited plan (5 GB a day at full speed, then slower) works out to a lower daily rate on a longer assignment. Every current option and price is in the plan selector at the top of this page.
In Afghanistan your plan connects to Roshan on 4G LTE, which handles maps, messaging, video calls, and streaming. There is no 5G in Afghanistan. Your phone joins automatically once the plan is switched on. If it hasn't connected a couple of minutes after landing, work through the no-signal checklist.
In the main cities and along the highways between them, yes. Coverage is strongest in Kabul, Herat, Mazar-i-Sharif, Kandahar, and Jalalabad and thins quickly in rural districts and the mountains, on every network. Download offline maps before any overland leg.
No plan works during a government-ordered suspension, whether it is an eSIM, a local SIM, or roaming. Mobile and internet services in Afghanistan were suspended nationwide for about two days at the end of September 2025. If your plan hasn't been switched on, nothing starts until you connect; if it is already running, its days keep counting. Keep documents, maps, and contacts saved offline and agree a check-in routine before you travel.
No. Afghanistan is sold as its own plan and is not in the Global plan. For the other countries on your route, add a plan for each to the same eSIM, or a regional plan where one covers several legs. Details in does a region plan cover every country in it?
Yes, if you have Wi-Fi. Adding the plan needs a connection, so do it at home or at your last stop where Wi-Fi is reliable rather than counting on finding it after you land. See buying while already abroad.
In the app: open My plans, choose your Afghanistan plan, and tap Top up. The extra data lands on the same eSIM within a few seconds, with nothing new to add or scan. You need a working connection to do it, so top up before a long overland leg, not during one. Full steps are in topping up data without reinstalling the eSIM.
Weeks ahead. The plan's days don't start until you turn it on and connect in Afghanistan, so a plan bought a month before departure is still complete when you land, and a delayed flight costs you nothing. Plans need to be activated within 90 days of purchase. See what plan validity means and when it starts.

Afghanistan eSIM for work, family, and transit trips
Set it up before you fly. It's live the moment you land, nothing to check, nothing to remember.

Trips to Afghanistan are rarely tourism. They are family visits, work assignments, and long overland transfers, and a working phone matters more than on most trips: for the person meeting you, the office expecting you, and the family at home waiting to hear you've arrived. Add an Afghanistan plan at home, on Wi-Fi, and your phone connects when you land in Kabul without a SIM kiosk, a QR code at the airport or a roaming bill afterward.
Below: how an Afghanistan plan works, how to set it up before you fly, what to expect on arrival and outside Kabul, and what to do about the other countries on your route.
If you travel to Afghanistan, you probably travel there more than once, and usually through a hub on the way. KnowRoaming fits that pattern. You add the KnowRoaming eSIM, called KR.One, to your phone once, then add a plan per leg: the United Arab Emirates (UAE) or Turkey for the layover, Afghanistan for the stay, Pakistan if the route goes overland. The next trip is a purchase, not a setup, and nothing needs deleting between assignments.
The plan's days start when you turn it on and connect in Afghanistan, not at checkout. Buy it weeks ahead, add it at home, and a delayed flight or a long border crossing costs you nothing. The full rule is in what plan validity means and when it starts.
Choose a fixed plan for a set amount of data at the lowest overall price, or an unlimited plan when you'd rather not count. For messaging, calls over WhatsApp, and maps, a fixed plan goes a long way; go unlimited if you'll be on video calls or working from the phone. Unlimited plans give you 5 GB a day at full speed, then a slower speed until the allowance resets the next day. If a fixed plan runs low, top up in the app and the extra data lands on the same eSIM.
See it in two minutes: Meet KR.One, iPhone setup with KR.One, or Samsung setup with KR.One.
Do this at home, or at your last stop with reliable Wi-Fi. It takes about a minute, and there may be no usable Wi-Fi on arrival.
Before you leave
- Get the KnowRoaming app (available on iOS and Android) and choose your Afghanistan plan.
- Tap Add. First time on this phone? The app adds KR.One and your Afghanistan plan together. Already have KR.One? Only the plan is added, with nothing to scan.
- Leave data roaming off on the KnowRoaming line until you land, and turn it off on your home line too so it doesn't run up charges in the background. Steps are in turning off roaming on your home line.
When you land
- Turn the plan on in the app, then turn data roaming on for the KnowRoaming line. That setting lives in your phone, so the app can't flip it for you.
- Give the phone a minute or two to find the network. If nothing happens, turn airplane mode on for 30 seconds and off again.
Prefer a QR code? The checkout page and your confirmation email both carry one; scan it from your phone's settings. Every tap, by device, is in adding your eSIM on iPhone, adding your eSIM on Android, and adding your eSIM on Samsung, or watch the iPhone QR walkthrough or the Samsung QR walkthrough. Still no signal after landing? Work through the no-signal checklist.
Your plan connects at Kabul's airport, and the first use is usually a message to whoever is meeting you. Calls over WhatsApp work on the plan; a data-only plan has no Afghan phone number, so give your contacts your WhatsApp or your home number, which keeps working on your home SIM.
Electricity supply is intermittent in much of the country, including parts of Kabul. A charged power bank keeps the phone, and therefore the plan, useful through a day of outages. Save offline maps, your documents, and your contacts' numbers on the phone before you travel, so nothing depends on a live connection at the wrong moment.
Your plan connects to Roshan on 4G LTE. There is no 5G in Afghanistan. Coverage is concentrated in Kabul, Herat, Mazar-i-Sharif, Kandahar, and Jalalabad and along the main highways between them, and it thins quickly in rural districts and the mountains. On overland routes, expect long stretches with no signal on any network. Your phone picks the network automatically once the plan is on; there is nothing to choose by hand.
Service note: mobile and internet services in Afghanistan have been suspended nationwide on government orders at short notice, most recently for about two days at the end of September 2025. During a suspension no plan works, whether it is an eSIM, a local SIM, or your home carrier's roaming. If you haven't switched your plan on yet, nothing starts until you connect; if it is already running, its days keep counting while the network is down. If you need to be reachable regardless, agree a check-in routine with people at home before you travel.
Afghanistan is not part of any KnowRoaming regional plan or the Global plan. If your route runs through Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, Islamabad, or Tashkent, each of those is a plan of its own, added to the same eSIM in about a minute; only the plan changes as you move, and a regional plan can cover several legs at once. Read do I need a new plan for every country? and crossing into a border country your plan doesn't include before you set off.
Most land traffic in and out of Afghanistan goes through a handful of crossings: Torkham and Spin Boldak to Pakistan, Hairatan to Uzbekistan, and Sher Khan Bandar to Tajikistan. An Afghanistan plan works up to the border and stops there. Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan are each KnowRoaming destinations, so add the plan for the other side to the same eSIM before you cross. Turkmenistan is not, so plan that leg without data.
Crossings involve waiting, often in places with no signal on any network. Have your documents, your contacts, and the next plan already on the phone before you reach the queue.
Most phones sold since 2019 support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later and most Android flagships from the same window. Check yours before you add a plan; it takes a few seconds. On iPhone, go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID or Available SIM. On Android, go to Settings, Network & Internet, SIMs and look for an option to add an eSIM. On Samsung, dial *#06# and look for an EID. A few regional variants ship without eSIM hardware, so the check is worth a minute even on a new phone.
Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. If you're not sure, carrier-locked vs unlocked: how to tell shows you where to look.
Adding an Afghanistan plan doesn't touch your regular SIM. Calls and texts on your usual number keep working exactly as before. The new plan handles data while you're there, and most phones run both at once without you doing anything else. Bank codes and two-factor texts still arrive on your home number, as long as that line stays switched on.
For Afghanistan the alternatives are thinner than usual. Many home carriers don't roam there at all, and those that do charge rates that stop you using the phone. A local SIM means registration paperwork on arrival and a number your family doesn't recognize. Guesthouse Wi-Fi is unreliable. An Afghanistan plan added before you fly gives you a known price, a connection from the airport, and your own number still working alongside it.
